The new store, which will also house the Simp* sons -Sears order office, makes a creditable addition to the business area and adds much to the up-to-date appearance of the shopping district. The building contains a to- tal floor space of 7,80G square feet of which 750 is allotted to Simpsons -Sears. The remain.- der emain*der of the building occupied by fiurke Electric contains an at- tractive, well*lighted show, room, motor rewind and repair shop and appliance service shop. The 3500 square foot basement is occupied by a warehousing area and in the building there is also a wiring supply depot for materials required in construc- tion contracting, Burke's contracting business is spread over a 30 mile radius In this vicinity and they handle all types of industrial and corn* mercial wiring installations, as well as domestic wiring con- tracts. Burke blectric is a mem- ber of the Academy of Lighting Arts, The Electric kleating As- sociation and The Electric Ser- vice League. The for- mer is a past president of the Wingham Kinsmen Club and is actively interested in the de- veloprnent of the community. After serving in the RCAF for three and a half years, Cal Burke established his first elec* trical business in 1t34v intheold Cooke factory immediately north of the CN crossing on Jose- phine Street. In 195'2 the bus- iness was moved to the present site and the electric motor re- pair and appliance lines were added, In 1959 an addition to the building was constructed, doubling the available floor space. Can April 113, 1964 the build- ing was so extensively damaged by fire than the firm was forced into temporary quarters in the Supertest building at the corner of Josephine and Victoria Streets, from where it has carried on business during the interval. Simpsons -Sears will move into their new quarters on Mon- day of next week. Finest Facilities In New Building The new Burke Electric build- ing is cement block construc- tion, with steel roof supports and decking. A. J. Brown of Walkerton had the building con- tract. Jos, Kerr and Harold Congram of Wingham, worked on the excavation and the dem- olition of the old building. Two local firms, Beaver Lumber Ltd., and Hodgins - McDonald Ltd. supplied most of the building material for the new building. Maitland Redi- Mix supplied the concrete for the job. Square Deal Construc- tion of Wingham, were called in for carpentry work and Rus- sell Zurbrigg handled the paint- ing. Percy Clark also of Wingham. looked after the plumbing re- quirements and Dace Murray worked on the steel portions of the structure where electric welding was required. Bullas Glass Ltd. of Kitchener, did the store front, and the roofing was done by 0. P. Schmitt of Kit- chener. Burke Electric vehicles which were purchased recently were supplied by McClure Motors and were painted at Marks Bros. body shop. Brand names which will be on display at the official open- ing include Frigidaire, :Moffat, McClary-Easy, General Elec- tric, Hobart and products from other well-known Canadian tirms.
