YOUNGSTERS IN THE 9 to 12 age group are meeting

RECREATION TOPICS
by IVAN KERSELL, Wingham Recreation Director.
Despite several rainy days
last week playground attend-
ance remained high. There are
100 youngsters registered in
the program and attendance
runs about 70 to 80 each day.
It rained most of Wednesday
and we held the program in the
Arena with about 50 children
in on the afternoon's fun. When
it rains in future on Mondays,
Wednesdays or Thursdays, the
playground program will be
held in the Arena. If it rains
on Tuesdays or Fridays, when
there is roller skating in the
evening, the playground pro-
gram will be cancelled.
The rain caught the recrea-
tion staff unprepared last week,
but the leaders came up with
a crash program that the young
people enjoyed. Over the
week -end the staff got their
heads together and have plan-
ned special indoor schedules for
such times. One event that has
proved very popular in other
communities is a mock track
and field event.
The first special event in
640061040044401001104.0111440 00100610006.00.1106
the playground schedule was
the beach party at the lake
when the youngsters were trans-
ported by bus on Wednesday.
The next one is a cook -out in
Riverside Park on Friday, July
23. On Wednesday, July 28,
the children go to Hanover for
a Play Day planned by the Lake
Huron Zone recreation direc-
tors. Other special events are
planned for August and will be
mentioned later.

For the past three weeks
there has been roller skating on
Sunday evening strictly for the
adults (married couples). At-
tendance has not been high --
about 30 people each evening -
but those that do come out en-
joy themselves very much.
Since this night is set aside for
adults only it is a good oppor-
tunity to learn while the floor
is not crowded and there are
no fancy skaters to distract the
learners.

The tennis program at the
high school is very well atten-
ded. It is felt that perhaps
evenings would be a more suit-
able time for tennis, for both
adults and youth. Registration
is $3.00 for the summer; ten-
nis balls and rackets are pro-
vided. The courts will be
supervised Monday, Wednesday
and Thursday evenings from 7
to 9 and each Tuesday and Fri-
day morning from 10 to 12
noon. You may contact the re-
creation office or register at
the high school tennis courts.
