The regular monthly meet- ing of the Wingham Recreation Council was held Sunday even- ing at the town hall. The vice- chairman, Mrs. Harold Wild, presided over the meeting in the absence of Jack Gorbutt. The recreation director pre- sented his proposal for the sum- mer recreation program. In- cluded are the Red Cross Learn to Swim program, summer playgrounds in Riverside Park, a morning Tot Lot held in the Kinsmen Park and tennis at the high school. SWIMMING Commencing on July 5th, and terminating August 27th, there will be swimming in- struction every morning from 9.00 until 12 noon, Monday through Friday. These classes will be for Beginners, Junior, Intermediate and Senior swim- mers. One or two evenings a week there will be classes for Red Cross Leaders and Bronze Medallion candidates. An adult swimming class will also be conducted if there is suffi- cient interest. Registration in the swimming program will be held June 21st and through to June 25th. Registration fee for swimming instruction will be $1.75 per child to a maximum of $5.00 per family. This does not include insu, once, which is extra. Miss Marilyn Riley is going to work to revive interest in the Maitland Mile Club.. It is hoped a Marathon Swim can be organized for sometime in August. Students will be pre- pared for the Red Cross Water Safety examinations to be held in mid-August. It is hoped this year to have the examinations conducted here so we do not have to take the young swim- mers to Goderich. After the swimming examinations there will be a swim meet and show-• Aquarama, tentatively planned for Saturday, August 21st. 0---0---0 PLAYGROUNDS Each afternoon through July and August commencing Mon- day, July 5th, a playground program will be conducted in Riverside Park. At the play- ground the children will learn arts and crafts, participate in such active games as softball, volleyball, archball rounder, tin can cricket, and horseshoes. There will be quiet and singing games for variety. The child- ren will receive instruction in preparation for the Track and Field Day. It is also hoped to organize a puppet theatre on the playground if there is suffi- cient interest. Special Events will include: A Play Day to be held in Han- over, Wednesday, July 14th; Beach Party, an afternoon's swimming at Point Clark on Friday, July 23rd; Bar -B -Q, a cook -out in Riverside Park, July 30th; Track and Field Day, to be held in Walkerton on Wednesday, August llth; pic- nic at Inverhuron, the Provin- cial Park, to be held Friday, August 20th; Penny Carnival and Parade to wind up the sum- mer program to be held Friday, August 27th. Registration in the Play- ground program will be held the week of June 21st to June 25th. 0--0--0 TOT LOT This will be a playground for pre-school children, 3, 4 and 5 years of age. It will be under the leadership of Mary Ahara and it is hoped it will develop into something more than a baby-sitting service. The children will participate in, not highly organized, but well supervised play. Children's games, simple arts and crafts, story -telling and some special events will be planned. This program will be conducted each morning, Monday through Fri- day, at the Kinsmen Park, 9.00 to 12 noon. Registration will be held the week of June 21st to June 25th. 0--0--0 TENNIS Instruction in tennis will be given each morning through the summer, commencing Mon- day, July Sth, at the high school tennis courts. Those wishing to just play the game without taking instruction are welcome to do so as long as they are registered in the pro- gram. Registration in the ten- nis program will be held June 21st through June 25th. It would be well to note here that all registrations will be taken at the recreation of- fice in the town hall. 0--0--0 Again this year the Recrea- tion Department will be respon- sible for providing guard ser- vice at the swimming area in the Maitland River. Through the month of June lifeguards will be on duty Monday through Friday, between the hours of 4 and 5.30 in the afternoon and between 7 and 8.30 in the evening. On Saturday and Sun- day the lifeguards will be on duty from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and in the evening from 7 to 8.30. Through July and August there will be continual life- guard service at the swimming area. These times will be post- ed at the bathhouse. People swimming in the area when there is no lifeguard on duty will do so at their own risk. Signs will be posted around the area to indicate this. Near the diving tower there will be a sign that will indi- cate when 'a lifeguard is on duty. There will also be a green flag flying in the swim- ming area when a lifeguard is on duty and a red flag when there is no lifeguard on duty. Parents are requested to keep their children away from the swimming area when no lifeguard is on duty unless they can be there themselves to watch their own child. Several Games WHITECHURCH-The Mid- gets will play Belgrave here on Friday evening at seven; the Pee Wees will play at Cran- brook on Thursday and on Sat- urday Atwood Pee Wees will be here; and on Tuesday June 15, the Intermediates will play Wingham in the Wingham Park at 8.30.
