Mr.Jack Milligan was in Waterloo on Sunday where he visited his sister, Mrs. Norman Ashby and Mr. Ashby, Mr. and Mrs. Ira McLean at- tended funeral services for Mr. Fleming Grainger on Monday Thankoffering Speaker Says Must 3e Stalwart WROXETER-Thompson Ra- mautarsingh, a high school teacher at Lucknow, was the guest speaker for the U. C. W. Thankoffering service held in the United Church on Sunday morning. His grandparents came from India and he grew up in Trinidad. His Christian name, Thompson, was that of missionaries in Trinidad when he was born. Mr. Ramautarsingh's topic was "Challenges up to Date". He said that indecision is the main drawback in the world to- day. The world provides us with many challenges, but we must be interested in the chal- lenges of the church. In 1864 Dr. Morton of the Maritimes visited Trinidad for health reasons. By 1867 the Mortons themselves were mini- stering to the people of Trini- dad. Now, in three years' time, February 1968, Trinidad will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the church. The church is 200,000 strong and Trinidad is now sending missionaries to other countries. Mr. Ramautarsingh pointed out that opportunities are at our disposal and we must not sit back and let others do the work. U.C.W. members made up the choir and under the direc- tion of Mrs. A. E. Martin sang "The Whole Wide World for Jesus". Mrs. Vem Hupfer, Mrs. Pete Dobson, Mrs.Jack Clarke and Miss Carol Louttit sang "Have You Counted the Cost?", as a double duet. The service and prayers were led by Rev. Fred Taylor. Institute Meets At Mrs. T. Burke's WROXETER-The June meet- ing, under Education and Citi- zenship, of the Women's Insti- tute met at the home of Mrs. Thomas Burke on Tuesday even- ing of last week. Mrs. William Wright was in the president's chair and welcomed all pres- ent. A thought for the day was read by the president. Mrs. Les- lie Douglas read a very fitting poem, "Trees". The topic, "Canada's Coat of Arms" was given by Mrs. Thomas Burke. Mrs. William Wright assisted by pointing out each symbol on the Coat of Arms which repre- sented historical background. The roll call, "A humorous in- cident in the classroom", brought a few responses. Mrs. A. Munro introduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Frank Walters of Walton, the district president of East Huron. Mrs. William T. McLean and Mrs. L. Van Velsor each gave a short report on the Insti- tute district annual held at Molesworth. A donation was sent to the School for Retarded Children in Wingham. It was decided to hold an Institute picnic on June 22 at Amberley. Mrs. Harvey Reidt conducted a contest on Canada. Mrs. L. Van Velsor thanked all who had helped in any way to make the meeting a success, and also presented Mrs. Walters with a small gift. The hostesses for the even- ing were Mrs.J. Simmons, Mrs. G. Howes and Mrs. T. Burke, assisted by Mrs. Leslie Douglas. from the D. A. Rann funeral home, 13russels. Mrs. Phyllis Bolander, John and Don of Fordwich, attended the Millar -Oakley wedding on Saturday, Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Wool - lett and family spent the week- end at their home here. Mr. and Mrs. George Gibson, Murray and Glenis, accompan- ied by Miss Gertrude Bush and Mrs. W, Weir, were in Toronto on Saturday where they visited Mr, and Mrs. Lloyd Weir and family. Jamie Sanderson of Toronto and David Sanderson, Ailsa Craig were guests of their pa- rents, Mr. and Mrs. James San- derson. Sunday visitors with Mrs. Wes Palmer were Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Henning and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Henning. Mr. Clarence Clement, Tor- onto, spent the week -end with Mrs. Clement at their home here. Mr. and Mrs. Fraser Haugh and Miss Eileen visited Mrs. Haugh's sister, Miss Bessie Stokes, at Victoria Hospital in London. Friends of Mr. and Mrs. Doug Statia were sorry to learn of their hospitalization following an auto accident Friday even- ing. Mr. and Mrs. Danny Salter spent the week -end at their home here. She is able to be about, and on the morning of her birthday, made a platter of doughnuts which she served to the twenty friends who called. Mrs. Stewart is a membeD of the Gorrie Presbyterian Church. She came to Howick Town- ship with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.John Burns, from Vallejo, Open House on Anniversary WROXETER-Mr. and Mrs. Bruce Chambers held open house for the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Wade, on the occasion of their 40th an- niversary on Sunday, when about 125 guests called to ex- tend best wishes to the happy couple. They were the recip- ients of numerous cards, gifts and flowers. Those attending from out of town were from Scotland, Ont.. Waterford, Brampton, Mildmay, Listowel, Palmerston, Sarnia, Toronto, Goderich, Gorrie, Clin- ton and Wingham. Married 25 Years WHITECHURCH-On Satur- day Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Con- ley of Langside celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. Pre- sent to celebrate the occasion were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Barthol- omew and Darryl of London, Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Conley and Laurie of Trenton as well as the family at home. All attended a family anni- versary dinner at Danny's Res- taurant, and on the way home, visited with Mr. and Mrs. Doug- las Conley. WHITECHURCH Mr. Victor Emerson, Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ritchie of Langside spent Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Bill Culbert of Kincardine. The men completed shingling Mr. Culbert's house roof. Mr. John Crowston had the misfortune to have his hand hurt last week by the tractor, when the spinner caught it. Mr. Bill Jeffery of Belmore visited on Sunday with Mr. George Conn. Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Laidlaw and Janet spent Sunday with her parents, Mr. and Mrs.John Crowston of Langside. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Emer- son visited on Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Russel Ritchie of Lang - side. Make Donation To Bible School FORDWICH-The general meeting of the Fordwich U. C. W. was held in the Sunday School rooms. The worship service was conducted by Mrs. W. Wilson, meditating on the changes since church union in 1925. She offered prayers for unity of all Christians. ' The study book was present- ed by Mrs. Crosby Sothern, dealing with the chapter on The Atonement from "The Word and the Way". Scripture pass- ages were read by Mrs; Jack Wilson, Miss Minnie McElwain and Mrs. S. Bride. Mrs. George Ashton presided for the business. The roll call was answered with an item from. The Observer. Mrs.Jack Wilson spoke on the require- ments for Vacation Bible School from August 9-13 and the U.C. W. voted a donation of money. Final arrangements were made for the Father and Son banquet on June 7th and the garden par- ty on June llth. Mrs. George Ashton closed the meeting with the benedic- tion. Mr. and Mrs. Wade were mar- ried June 3, 1925 at the Wing - ham Presbyterian manse by the Rev. Dr. David Perrie. They have lived most of the time since in Wroxeter. Mrs. Wade is a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Mr. Wade is a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Wade, all of Wroxeter. They have one daughter, Mrs. Bruce Chambers. Mr. Wade is an em- ployee of the Ontario Depart- ment of Highways. Bruce Chambers greeted the guests at the door followed by daughter, Leone and Mrs. Cham- bers, who presented them to the honored couple. A three-tier wedding cake centred the table and the Har- mony Group served a dainty lunch. Salano County, California at the age of seven, and has lived here since that time. She re- tired to Gorrie ten years ago. Mrs. Stewart recalls riding to school on horseback when she was in California. She has two sons, Burns who lives in Gorrie, and Oliver in Howick Township. There are ten grandchildren and 18 great- grandchildren. A sister, Mrs. George Harris lives in Rosetown, Sask. Mrs. Stewart had an aunt who lived to be 90. Gifts of China, Loth Anniversary WHITECHURCH-Over 20 relatives gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Currie Saturday evening in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Currie's 20th wedding anniversary on June 6th. Euchre was enjoyed. Russel Gaunt expressed the good wish- es of the gathering and hoped they would have many more years of health and happiness. They were presented with sev- eral pieces of china, for which they made fitting replies. Lunch was served by Mrs. James Currie, Mrs, Russel Gaunt and Miss Leah Currie of Wingham.
