Public Works Problems
Continued from Page One
tied as soon as possible in order
to facilitate the placing of the
sewer lines.
Mr. Wild said that people in
the Berry subdivision have reg-
istered complaints regarding
the blaektopping on Angus
Street. He said that a number
of ratepayers in this area have
expressed the view that when
they signed a petition for sewer
lines, it was on the understand-
ing that the street would be pa-
ved this year, Councillor Cal-
lan and Reeve Kerr said they
did not think this was the case,
as Summit Drive has been slat-
ed for surfacing before Angus
Street.
STREET LIGHTS
Council concurred with a
request by the PUC for a blan-
ket motion to cover the chang-
ing of street lights from the
series system of wiring to the
preferred multiple system.
About two-thirds of the town
has been changed to the latter
method and it is a continuing
program which it is estimated
will take three years to com-
plete.
Councillor Wild said that
there had been complaints
about weeds in the comer pro-
perty owned by the town at the
Finnigan Store. He said arrang-
ments would be made to have
the town workmen cut the grass
in the area. The same direc-
tions will be given in regard to
an overgrown piece of property
on Albert Street next to the
lane which is an entrance to
the Walden Bros. Transport pro-
perty. He said that one rate-
payer in this area had com-
plained about large trucks us-
ing the lane.
Reeve Kerr said that very
few trucks are using the lane
which is owned by the transport
firm, and in regard to a dust
problem he felt the company
would likely co-operate in
putting down chloride.
Councillor Wild said the
ball club wanted fencing erect-
ed at the park, Council agreed
to have snow -fence put up at
this location.
Deputy Reeve Alexander
said that the Department of Na-
tional Defence has returned the
old firehall to the town, which
it had under lease, The build-
ing will be used to garage the
old fire truck, which will make
room for the new water tanker
that was put into service this
spring.
ONE COMMITTEE
Councillor Bateson said that
it appears it will be wise to
amalgamate the Recreation
Committee and the Arena Com-
mission into one organization.
Councillor Moszkowski said the
committees are now working
under 1947 regulations. He
said neither group, under new
regulations, should have its
own bank account. The pro-
blem started a long discussion
by council. However, it was
left that the two groups should
meet and bring in a recommen-
dation to council.
Council passed a motion ap-
pointing Miss Y,McPherson as
acting clerk -treasurer while
Clerk William Renwick is on
holidays.
Five building permits were
given an OK by council includ-
ing that of the hospital for a
$589, 950 building program.

'POLICE COMMUNICATIONS
PROBLEM 15 DISCUSSED
Councillor W. G,Crujek'
shank reported to council en
Monday evening that the local
police department has a pro -
in communications for
which there does not seem to
be any economical answer,
He explained that the only
apparent remedy is the instal-
lation of two-way radio com-
munication, but this has been
investigated thoroughly and it
appears that the cost is exces-
sive. He estimated it would
take two to three mills on the
tax rate to set up a proper sys-
tem.
Councillor Cruickshank told
the council that the police are
using a recorder which will
take telephone messages. The
problem arises when people
phoning in complaints do not
leave a recorded message, but
hang up as soon as they realize
they are not talking personally
to the officer.
The public apparently fails
to realize that as soon as a
call is placed to the police de-
partment a red light is auto-
matically turned on in front of
the town hall. The officer on
duty is constantly checking
this light when he is on patrol.
As soon as he sees the light on
he returns to the office to take
the call. However, on his re-
turn he frequently finds that
the caller has not left his name
or message on the recorder.
Mr. Cruickshank was of the
opinion that some people are
afraid of the recorder, perhaps
believing the message could
be used as evidence. The fact
of the matter is that as soon as

Members of Branch 180,
Royal Canadian Legion, held a
farewell party for George
Brooks at the Legion Home on
Saturday night. Euchre was
played and George was present-
ed with a wallet and gift of
money by Bob Irvine, on be-
half of the members. Lloyd
Carter also said a few words,
George is a past president
of the local branch and has
been sergeant -at -arms for sev-
eral years. He has been a faith-
ful and active member of the
branch and will be greatly miss-
ed.
George has been working
in Stratford for some time.

the police play the message
back it is wiped out in order to
clear the tape for the next call.
The councillor also said that
apparently the public does not
listen to the recorded message
because it will tell the calling
party how to contact the police
cruiser by radio telephone
which is carried in the cruiser.
Anyone can phune the cruiser
by dialing the radio telephone
operator at Clinton, who will
relay the message, and the
town pays the necessary charges.
Councillor Cruickshank said
that if the callers would leave
their names or phone numbers
when they find the police are
not in, and the call in answer-
ed by the recorder, it would
greatly simplify the problem
for the police. It was felt that
the system was not fully under-
stood by many people and that
some publicity on the subject
would be of value.
Delay in Cleaning
Lower Town Pond
Maitland Valley Conserve-
tion Authority officials said
this week that the 4e -silting
of the lower pond will have to
be delayed until next Septem,
ber. It had been anticipated
that the pond work would pro-
ceed this month.
Work on the new culverts
an the Lower Town dam has
been completed and it was hop-
ed to drain the pond in order
that the Harold Kerr Construe --
tion Co. could begin the clean-
ing operation.
However, Mr. Kerr reported
to the Authority that other
work accepted by the firm will
delay the operation until next
September.
In a way, this will be good
news for some, as the pond
draining would have created
problems in connection with the
summer swimming program.
