Children Home dor celebration

WHITECHURCH-Last Wed-
nesday, April 21, Mr. and Mrs.
Gershom Johnston of East Wawa -
nosh celebrated their 50th wed-
ding anniversary with open
house held afternoon and even-
ing.
Mrs. Johnston is a daughter
of the late Mr. and Mrs. William
Elliott of the "Brick Yard" near
Glenannan and Mr. Johnston is
the son of the late Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Johnston of Kinoss, 2 miles
north of Whitechurch. The
Johnston farm was the one now
owned by Russel Ross.

daughters, June (Mrs. Ted Ro-
binson) of Donnybrook, Alice
(Mrs. Clarence Ritchie) White-
church, Aerial (Mrs. Charles
Wood) Egmondyill ,Lois (Mrs.
Ross McMichaeR, .3, Sea -
forth and Donalda (Mrs. Stew -
an Smith) Kitchener; three
sons, Jack of London, Jim of
Listowel and Kenneth of Clin-
ton, Two sons are deceased,
Elliott who died at the age of
38 and Billie, aged 11,
All the family .and most of
the in«laws and grandchildren
were present for the happy oc.
casion. They have 31 grand-
children, four great grandchild-
ren and Mrs. Clarence Ritchie
and Jack Johnston received the
guests,
Grandchildren Barbara Ritch-
ie and Dianna Smith served
lunch in the afternoon and Lin-
da McMichael, Marilyn and
Marie Johnston served in the
evening.
Among the gifts received
were a chrome set from the
family and Murray Gaunt, M. P.
P., presented a plaque from
the government,
The serving table was en-
hanced with a beautiful three-
tier wedding cake, a piece of
which was served to all present.
Despite the rain and fog a
large crowd did honor to the
happy couple and this commu-
nity adds their congratulations
and best wishes.

Mr. Glyn Pinkney, who
spent the Easter vacation with
Mr, and Mrs. Ted Collyer, re-
turned to his home in Ajax on
the week -end,
Visitors on Thursday with
Misses Annie and Mary Laid-
law were Mrs. John Hutchison
and her daughter, Mrs. Ed Nich-
olson and Colleen of St.Marys.
Euchre Party
I3ELGRAVE A euchre and
dance was held in the Foresters'
Hall on Friday, Music for
dancing was by Jim Scott's or-
chestra,
There were seven tables of
euchre.. High lady was Audrey
Coultes; high man, Leslie Bolt;
low lady, Mrs. Ross Robinson;
low man, Grant Coultes.

New Study Book
WHITECHURCH- On Sunday
Chalmers Presbyterian Children
of the Church met during church
service in the school room, The
leader, Mrs, Hugh Simpson,
gave the call to worship and a
poem," God Is a Loving Father".
The election of officers was
held: President, Ruth Elliott;
secretary, Mary Lou Wall;treas-
urer, Irene De Boer; pianist,
Darlene Simpson.
Robert Watt received the
offering and the prayer was
given by Cecil De Boer. The
new study book, "Neighbors",
was started. The first story,
The New Horne, was the lesson
and told about a Dutch family
who had come to settle in Al-
berta. Eileen DeBoer displayed
many articles that had been
sent to her from her friends in
Holland.
Prayer was offered by Linda
Mewhinney. Mrs. Earl Caslick
conducted a contest on people
of the Bible. A hymn was sung
and the meeting closed by re-
peating the Lord's Prayer in
unison.

Wawanosh which were blocked
before Easter because of flood

visited on Sunday with Mrs.
Cassie Falconer and other rela-

Mrs. Charlie Showers was
admitted during the week -end
to Victoria Hospital, London.
Mrs. Ken Hopwood of Trenton
and Mr. Leslie Showers, Toronto,
visited with their mother before
her departure to hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. George Currie
of East Wawanosh spent Easter
vacation with her family in
London.
Mr, and Mrs. Wallace Conn
and Mrs. Ronald Coultes spent
Friday in London and visited
with Mr. George Conn and Mr.
Murray Coultes, students at the
University of Western Ontario,
who are this week writing
exams.

Preparatory service will be
held Friday evening, April 30
at 8 p.m. in Chalmers Presby-
terian Church, Langside congre-
gation will also attend when
Rev. G, Fish will conduct the
service. He will also conduct
the communion service on Sun-
day. Sunday School service is
withdrawn at Chalmers Church.

led in prayer. Scripture was
read by Jim Cook, The story,
"The Call to Service" was read
by Ruth Michie.
Roy Mundy, Wingham,
showed slides of his trip to
Western Canada and San 1'ran-
ciscu, Mrs, Earl Anderson thank-
ed Mr. Mundy.
The offering was received
by Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Gras -
by and dedicated by Lloyd
Michie. A hymn was sung and
benediction closed the meeting.

school room of the Church, The
president, Mrs, Victor Ernerson,
welcomed the guests from
Wingham W. M, S. , and White-
church United Church, Easter
visitors and the group's own
members,
A. hymn was sung and Mrs.
Donald Watt led in prayer,
Scripture, a hymn, meditation
by Miss Lila Emerson and pray-
er by Miss Annie Laidlaw fol-
lowed. The roll call was ans-
wered by 16 members.
Mrs, John McGee of Wing -
ham W. M. S. gave a musical
number. The guest speaker,
Miss Sadie Johnston of Ashfield
Presbyterian Church, gave the
Easter message, The cross
means we must carry whatever
burdens we are asked to bear.
She told of the cruel death of
Jesus and .the picture of the
crucifixtion was clearly presen-
ted. Jesus is calling all to
service for Him. If we wish to
inherit eternal life, we must
be His witnesses at home and
unto the uttermost parts of the
earth. A poem on the Church
closed the message. Mrs, An-
drew Gaunt thanked the speak-
er and presented her with a
gift,
Mrs, Millan Moore gave
the number for Whitechurch U.

Watch" and "What Does Easter
Mean to You?" The offering
was received by Mrs. Wallace
Conn and Mrs, Dave MacDon-
ald and the prayer was given
by Mrs. Conn,
Mrs, Conn gave a reading,
"Easter Customs", in the reign
of Elizabeth 1 friends were giv-
en gloves with Easter eggs, In
Poland menvisitors call at a

with water or perfume. Easter,
the feast of eggs, is emblem-
atic of the resurrection and
future life. In New Mexico,
the sacred flame is ignited
from a flint and the lighted
candle carried through the
church. The Saxons introduced
Easter to England by kindling
bonfires. In Poland the Easter
feast is like Christmas.

Donna Dawson celebrated her
fourth birthday on Saturday by
having a birthday party with
guests Doreen Taylor, Margaret
and Douglas Arbuckle, Mari-
lyn Congram, Linda Machan,
Brenda Nethery, Carol and
Kathy Galbraith and Darlene
Coultes.
During the afternoon the
