What women wear on their
feet this spring will be more
important to the fashion look
of the costume than at almost
• any time in history.
The short skirt and leggy
look, textured stocking vogue
and pale tones in nylons, plus
the growing trend toward en-
semble dressing, all demand
up-to-date footwear coordina-
tion, if women are to look
their best in the clothes they
buy.
Opened up styling domin-
ates the field this spring. Show-
ing great variety in their open-
ed up effects, and a wide range
of heel heights --low to mid-
dling and high --shoes featured
by the Shoe Information Bureau
include slings, T and strippy
strap types. Bared sides, lower
toplines, and airy decorative
• cutouts emphasize the "open"
look in pumps. In some in-
stances, pumps were almost
slings. Up -front treatments in
high-rise shaped tongues, tabs,
bows and ties, achieve the
"look" through artful side and

vamp cutouts, and in lowered
side lines, One -eyelet walking
ties on set back heels show
open backs and shank cutouts.
Fashion focus is still on
closed toe styling though the
Bureau did model one open
toe, open back sandal. As
summer takes over, such types
will come more to the fore.
Straighter heels are seen
for spring, and remain slim for
dress -up and late -day. In gen-
eral, for daytime and casual
wear, heel shapes boast varying
degrees of thickness, depend-
ing on the fullness of the toe.
There will be fewer stacked
heels and many more set back
types.
The color story spotlights

followed by the paleneutralsor.
eggshell tones, deepening into
beiges and mid -browns. Navy
blue is expected to make a
good showing, moving ahead of
red in importance. In pastels,
it's mostly blue and pink.
Patent leather, finely grain-
ed calf, reptiles --genuine or
print, with and without lustre
finish, and kidskin are the lead-
ing shoe materials. Combining
of two textures of leather, such
as reptile with calf or kid, etc.
is a fashion factor. Combining
of two colors, for example
beiges and browns, is also seen.
Silk faille bows, small and
ladylike, or tailored and flat,
tiny shoestring leather types,
and ornamental buckles fre-
quently make their appearance.
CHAINED TO LEATHER and loving it is the girl wearing
this new sling -back for spring. For bared beauty, it will
be hard to beat his pale green cocktail shoe of smooth
leather. Its slim gold chain is held by a bone leather
strip and elasticized sling -back. -Leather Industries Photo.

Shorter Skirts
This Season
Spring is writing a new chap-
ter in fashion, Fashion is back
on a feminine track --boyish
girls are out; masculine clothes
gone,
Hemlines, stabilized for
many seasons, are on the rise
again. Dimpled knees show be-
neath abbreviated skirts and
the emphasis has shifted once
again to the leg.
Women will wear their
skirts as short as they can get
away with, but everyone must
adjust hemlines to suit herself.
There is a great difference be-
tween young and girlish and
young and womanly. Skirts
above the knee are for 18-year-
olds and high school girls, and
that's where they should stay.
Spring shapes up with a
whole new explosion of soft
dresses. There is a return to the
deep armhole, the dolman
sleeve and shoulders are natural
with collars smaller. Waist-
lines are flexible, from Empire
to hipbone. Narrow belts and
soft bows rnark the waistline,
Good Posture
Easily Acquired
A graceful walk and correct
posture will do much to en-
hance a woman's appearance
and proper exercise can correct
figure defects.
A girl should always avoid
walking with her legs too far
apart, since this results in an
awkward gait. The legs should
move close enough to each
other so that the knees just
graze in passing. To improve
the manner of walking, walk a
chalkline, and practise this
single -line manner. When a
person straddles in walking,
she looks broad because she is
waddling and in time becomes
broader because she is spread-
ing muscles that should not be
spread.
If the arms are too fleshy
and flabby -looking this can be
corrected through exercise.
Standing in good posture, ex-
tend arms out sideways at
shoulder level. Then rotate
the right arm in its socket by
reaching out in a big circle,
repeat the same with the left
arm, and finally both arms
simultaneously. Relax when
tired, then repeat.
To develop the bustline,
stand erect with both arms
straight out at the sides at
shoulder level, swing them for-
ward, crossing them in front
as far as possible, and keep
swinging them forward and
back as fast and as long as pos-
sible.
Steam Bath
Cleanses
Facial Pores
Steam baths have long been
popular for "steam cleaning"
the body. Complexion cons-
cious women are now using the
same method for cleansing
their face.
This will not only deep -
clean your pores because of the
increased perspiration it pro-
duces, but it also brings a won-
derfully natural blush -red to
your cheeks --a nice effect for
special occasions.
You can steam your face
either by holding your head
over a pot of boiling water
with your head covered by a
big turkish towel (be careful,
though, of steam -burns!), or
by folding a towel into two or
three layers, putting it in hot
water, and then putting this
on your face.
You can do this two or three
times during the steaming,.
then dash your face with cold
water to prevent too much re-
laxation of thc pores. Finish
up the treatment by applying
a thin layer of skin cream and
leaving this on for at least a
half-hour. Your pores will also
be particularly responsive to
massage at this time.
Pretty Lingerie
For Short Skirts
The new, short skirts dictate
that petticoats, slips and petti-
pants must be chosen with care,
for they are likely to show.
The above -the -knees style
skirts for the young ladies call
for an equally bold concept in
co-ordinating lingerie. It is
more in keeping with this look
to wear a green slip with a blue
dress, pink under navy, yellow
under orange. Since slip hems
may show when one sits down,
the lingerie color should be as
nice a color complement as a
scarf.
Popular colors this spring are
corals, blushing pinks, soft yel-
lows and green tinged yellows,
true blues and blues influenced
by green, and black and white.
Lace and floral embroidery
on sheer, and chemise slips
with camisole tops are dainty.
The shift gowns and baby doll
pyjamas provide sleeping com-
fort.
A useful and functional gar-
ment is the pantie slacks, an
ankle -length pantie ideal for
wear under slacks, eliminating
the unsightly line of short pan-
ties.
Since pants are playing such
an important role in spring col-
lections designers have agreed
that a new padded, uplift girdle
for high, rounded curves is the
answer in giving pants a femin-
ine look.
Co-ordination,
Boon to Teens
There is plenty of emphasis
on color, a whole vast range of
pant suits, and a feeling for co-
ordination that will be a boon
to budget -conscious teens this
spring.
Plaid wool turns up in pant
suits with blazer jackets, again
in slim skirts that can be team-
ed with the jackets and shell
tops that can be worn with the
pants.
Navy and white wool flan-
nel makes another crisp group
with shifts, jackets, skirts and
tops that can be mixed and
varied to the teen heart's con-
tent.
Detail that bears watching --
the slight contour that gives
subtle shape to a shift, the fine
embroidery that gives a custom-
made accent to a blouse, the
contrasting piping that gives
just the right color accent to an
outfit.

Enamelled Pins Flutter,
Fly; Float and Flatter
The new mood of Spring
Fashion is a strong statement of
delicate colors, of a poised,
pretty, feminine and young
sophistication. Subtle colors
such as oyster beige, pale bitter
lemon, grass green, milky cor-
al and icy blue worn in tonali-
ties or as accents to each other
are splendid foils for dramatic
and appropriately matching or
contrasting jewels. Handbags,
gloves, hosiery are paled, butter
soft and fragily feminine.
The accent of an enameled
flower pin creates a focal point
for the simplicity of round, ba-
teau and cowl necklines, pre-
valent in spring collections.
Pins in a galaxy of colors and
designs are perfect exclama-
tion points for the long, lean
hip length jackets and slender
coats.
Enamels for spring are pri-
marily soft in hue. Cabochon
moonstones bathed in a soft
glow in combination with bril-
liants and enamel are exciting,
imaginative and pretty.
Spring "creatures" are fun
and amusing; gold -tone bugs
and beetles with fine, silhouet-
ted wings will march smartly
across the lapel of a suit or ac-
centuate an interestingly new -
looking short cap sleeve. One
might pair a "creature" with a
pretty posy for a conversation -
starter, or perch them charm-
ingly on a hat.
The animal (beastie) influ-
ence is felt, too, upon the arm -
with lots of short sleeves and
3/4 length sleeves in fashion
focus. Choose a golden -tone
wrist -encircling ram's head or
serpent bracelet; worn two `at a
time, the effect is tantalizing;
choose from a series of textured,
nubby, crunchy gold tone bang-
les for drama.
The pierced ears have it for
spring, in a wide collection of
styles, from delicate stone
studs to crystal and rhinestone
drops for evening wear.
The lady -like elegance of
"pearls" blends perfectly with
the spring -summer pales and
looks wonderful with smooth
tweeds and soft -in -hand fabrics.
Clasps become important to
contrast and blend with fashions,
and add a jeweller's touch to
pearl necklaces.
