FORDWICH-Mr. and. Mrs,
Noah Ries were pleasantly sur-
prised on Wednesday evening at
the home of their son-in-law
• and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Ron
McMichael of Wroxeter, on
the occasion of their 40th wed-
ding anniversary. Former neigh-
bors of the ninth line of Howick
joined with them,
• Mr.and Mrs. Ries were pre-
sented with a chenille bed-
spread, for which they thanked
everyone. Progressive euchre
was enjoyed and lunch was ser-
ved. They were also presented
with a beautifully decorated
three-tier wedding cake.
Mr, and Mrs. Ries were mar-
ried on February 18, 1925, in
the Walkerton Lutheran church.
They have three children, Mrs.
Harold (Thelma) Mullens of
Aylmer, Quebec, Willard of
• Hamilton and Mrs. Ron (Ethel)
McMichael of Wroxeter. They
have seven grandchildren,

more United Churches gathered
at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Gordon Wright on Tuesday eve-
ning for the February meeting.
With Elmer Haskins presid-
ing, the meeting opened by
singing "Dear Lord and Father
of Mankind". Jack Ferguson led
the responsive Scripture reading,
which was followed by a poem,
Meeting the Master" by Mrs. J.
Ferguson. Prayer was offered by
Mrs. G. Wright.
A valentine contest and sev-
eral others were enjoyed, some
of which stumped the experts.
The social hour concluded with
lunch, and benediction.

Over 100 Girls Attend
4-H Achievement Day
GORRIE-Four district girls
received provincial honor cer-
tificates and pins at Howick
Central School on Saturday when
4-H homemaking clubs of the
district held Achievement Day.
Receiving certificates were Bar-
bara McNaught of Monkton,
Beth McMurchy of Molesworth,
Mrs. Alice Triebner and Gale
Wilson, both of Brussels.
In other presentations Mrs.
Howard McNaught of Monkton
received a leader's certificate
from Miss Patricia Damude,
Huron County home economist,
who was in charge of the pro-
gram. The theme was "The
Club Girl Stands on Guard".
Completing six projects, 13
girls received county honor
certificates. They were Mari-
lyn Crawford and Marie Ronnen-
berg, both of RR 1, Monkton;
Anne Exel, Brussels; Nancy
Strickler, RR 2, Brussels;Louise
McComb, Clifford; Mary San-
derson, RR 2, Wroxeter; Orma
Smith, Ethel; Wendy McEwan,
Lynn Johnson and Cathy Klinck,
all of RR 2, Gorrie; Carol Ann
Hohnstein and Gladys Huth,
both of Clifford, and Marion
llarding of RR 1, Gorrie.
Skits were presented by clubs
from Cranbrook, Belmore, Gor-
rie II and two Molesworth clubs.
Exhibits were shown by Brussels,
Gorrie I, Lakelet, Ethel, Mon-
crieff and Wroxeter clubs with
the narrators being Gerda Exel,

dale commented on the demon-
strations and skits and Mrs. Mari-
lyn Ritchie of St. Paul's on the
exhibits. Greetings were brought
by Mrs. Frank Walters, president
of the East Huron Women's In-
stitute. A total of 107 girls
from eleven clubs attended.

Miss B. Gilmar,
Carrick Native
GORRIE-Miss Bessie Victoria
Gilmar, 64, died Tuesday, Feb-
ruary 16 in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida. She was the youngest
of the family of the late Mr.
William Gilmar and his wife,
Rachel Wynn, and was born
February 16, 1901 on Conces-
sion 2, Carrick Township. She
had resided in the United States
for the past 30 years.
Miss Gilmar was a member
of McIntosh United Church,
Surviving are two brothers,
Edwin of Gorrie and Robert of
Fawcett, Alta. ; four sisters, Mrs
Joseph (Luella) Sanderson of
Gorrie; Mrs. Sidney (Barbara)
Brunskill of Saskatoon; Mrs.
James (Margaret) Hooey, Fort
Lauderdale; and Mrs. Wilfred
(Laura) Brown, Detroit. Two
sisters predeceased her, Mrs.
Thomas (Annie) Sangster and
Mrs. Edwin (Bertha) Bennett.
A Christian Science funeral
was held Thursday at Fort Laud-
erdale.

Achievement Day
LAKELET- Thirteen local
girls who are members of the
Lakelet 4-H Homemaking Club
attended Achievement Day at
the Howick Central School on
Saturday.
Misses Lois Ferguson and
Connie Allan presented a dem-
onstration during the afternoon
program, "First Aid in the
Home". Congratulations go to
Misses Gladys Huth, Carol Anne
Hohnstein and Louise McComb
who received County Honorpins
and certificates for having com-
pleted six projects.
All thirteen girls received
achievement certificates and
sterling silver spoons.
The spring project will be
the garden club.

Needed in Brazil
LAKELET- The monthly meet
ing of the McIntosh United
Church Women was held at the
home of Mrs. Eldon Renwick on
Wednesday with an attendance
of 17 members. Opening devo-
tions included a hymn, Scrip-
ture reading by Mrs. Len Har-
per, with commentary by Mrs.
Man Darling, and prayer by
Mrs. Jaynes Busby.
The president, Mrs. Jack
Inglis, conducted the business,
and Mrs. Robert Wood and Mrs.
Harvey Wright presented an in-
teresting study on Brazil, stress-
ing the need for many more
churches there, and describing
it as one of the most neglected
mission fields in the whole
world.
The meeting closed with the
benediction and lunch was ser-
ved by Mrs. Clarke Renwick,
Mrs. A. Darling and Mrs. E.

Vows Said
BELMORE-A quiet wedding
was solemnized in Belmore
United Church en Saturday after-
noon, February 20, when Rev.
Douglas L. Steven united in mar-
riage Pauline Anne Ward of RR
1, Wroxeter, and Kenneth H.
Weigel of RR 3, Mildmay. The
bride is the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. John T. Ward of Wroxeter,
and the groom is the son of Mr.
Elmer B. Weigel of RR 3, Mild-
may.
The bride was given inmar-
riage by her father. She wore a
white cocktail -length gown,
with white accessories and a
purple orchid corsage.
Matron of honor was Mrs.
Shirley Reibeling, and Robert
Thompson was groomsman.
Mr. and Mrs. Weigel will
reside in the Kitchener area.

Mr,Jim Richardson was ad-
mitted to Wingharn and District
Hospital on Thursday with a
bronchial condition. His many
friends wish him a speedy re-
covery, Simon De Boer, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Pete De Boer is
assisting at the Richardson home
with the farm chores.
Mr. Jim Orr of London spent
a few days last week with his
mother, Mrs. William Orr and
Robert of Langside,
Mr. Alfred Buckton was able
to return to the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Tom Morrison
and Mr, Morrison, from Wing -
ham and District Hospital.
Mrs. James Laidlaw was re-
moved by ambulance to Wing -
ham and District Hospital on
Saturday afternoon. Mrs. Laid-
law had been home from the
hospital for about a month where
she had been confined with flu,
but has not regained her strength.
Misses Donna and Anne Rin-
toul of Kitchener spent the
week -end with their parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rintoul.
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Stacey
and family moved from the Mr.
Angus Falconer's farm house, to
Wingham on Saturday.
Mr. Allister Hughes, Kinloss
road superintendent, Mr. A.
Murray, reeve and Mr. Wallace
Conn, councillor, are this week
attending the Good Roads con-
vention in Toronto.
Mr. George Conn is at his
home here this week. The Uni-
versity has granted this holiday
with no Easter week holiday,
Mrs. George Needham of
Pinkerton visited Thursday with
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira
Wall.
Miss Ruth Taylor of Toronto
was home with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Lawrence Taylor.
On Saturday two ground hogs
were wandering around the field
within range of Jim Taylor, who
shot one of them.

vice-president, opened the Feb-
ruary meeting of the Women's
Missionary Society of Knox
Presbyterian Church with a call
to worship on Thursday. A
hymn was sung and Miss E.
Stokes read from Paul's letter
to the Philippians a plea for
unity and humility. Mrs. H.
Ballagh took as a meditation
the challenge facing the mem-
bers as the society begins its
second century of service. Mrs.
A.Jeffray led in prayer.
Mrs. E.Jeffray and Mrs. D.
McPherson were appointed dele-
gates to the Hamilton and Lon-
don Synodical meetings, to be
held in Walkerton on April 6, 7
and 8. Mrs. R. Dickson was
chosen to represent the society
at the World Day of Prayer at
Maclntosh Church on March 5.
Twelve members answered
the roll call with interesting
articles from the Glad Tidings
and the offering was received by
Donna Jeffrey.
The history of the national
society was reviewed in a brief
skit narrated by Mrs.E.Jeffray
with Mrs. A. Mundell, Miss E.
Stokes, Mrs. D. McPherson, Mrs.
D. MacAdam, Mrs, E. Zinn, Mrs.
John Dickson and Mrs. R. Dick-
son assisting. A questionnaire
on women's organizations iti the
church was also discussed, after
which the meeting closed with
singing a hymn and prayer by
Mrs. McPherson.

United YPS Holds
Sunday Meeting
WHITECHURCH-The Y.P.S,,
held a meeting Sunday evening
at the United Church. The pre-
sident, Miss Barbara Purdon,
opened the meeting with a sing-
song. Arthur Laidlaw, secretary,
read the minutes and roll call
was answered by eleven. The
next meeting will be held on
March 7.
The president turned the
meeting over to the committee,
Misses Diane Coultes, Janis Far-
rier and Margaret Moore. The
call to worship was given by
Miss Janis Farrier; the Scripture
and comments on it were by
Miss Diane Coultes and Janis
Farrier offered prayer.
Miss Margaret Moore gave
readings, "Nodding to Some-
body" and " The God of Jacob".
Discussion followed on these
stories. The meeting closed
with the benediction.

WHITECHURCH-Mrs. Eunice
Gillespie received word this
week that Mrs.John McLeanhad
fallen and broken her hip and
an elbow. Mrs. McLean, who
had been visiting in Oakville,
is in Trafalgar Hospital there,
Mrs. McLean will be remem-
bered by many in this district,
She and her late husband, John
McLean, were owners of the
general store now operated by
Russel Chapman. They sold the
store to Carl Loughran, who in
turn sold to Mr. Chapman,
