10 Indoor Painting Tips
To Make Job Go faster
Painting is easy- if well plan-
ned. Everything will go quicker
if all supplies are at hand and
a step-by-step plan followed.
A talk with the paint dealer
will be helpful. He can suggest
the best product for the surface,
how much paint to buy, list the
supplies necessary to make the
job easier.
Here are 10 tips for indoor
painting:
1. Select the paint product
best suited for the job.
2. Follow manufacturer's di-
rections on the can.
3. Use good quality brushes
or rollers.
4. Protect floors and furni-
ture,
5. Prepare the surface pro-
perly.
Need More
Outlets?
The arrangement of furniture
in a room should dictate the
location of some of the electri-
cal outlets. Many older homes
do not have enough outlets and
extension cords are strung from
place to place. This is notonly
annoying and unsightly, but
can be a fire hazard.
Because our use of electri-
city is increasing with the pass-
age of time, it is advisable to
have the present electrical sys-
tem checked by a qualified
electrician to be sure the cir-
cuits are adequate.
Decorating Scope
In Ceiling Tile
Because of the demand by
home owners for ceiling tiles
that give acoustical treatment,
the building products industry
has developed an unlimited
variety of these tiles in almost
any style.
For every ceiling tile with
a given noise reduction rating,
there is a choice available in
perforated, fissured, textured
or sculptured designs--tomatch
any decorating scheme.
Ceiling tile can be arranged
in sundry ways for special ef-
fects. The checkerboard ar-
rangement is about the easiest.
In checkerhoarding, two dif-
ferent tile designs can be alter-
nated; or, the direction of the
same design can be alternated.
Other interesting arrange-
ments symmetrical or asym-
metrical involving any number
of different tile designs, can be
made.
For example, a contrasting
tile can he applied as a border
around the ceiling. Such "cus-
tom ceilings" are particularly
effective in large rooms.
In order to visualize in ad-
vance a custom ceiling ideal,
a detailed scale plan, indicat-
ing tile arrangement, should
be laid out on graph paper.
Once the arrangement ]las been
plotted, the scale plan can
then he used as a guide for tile
installation.
1t you don't have a specific
ceiling tile arrangement in
mind, check with your build-
ing products dealer. Undoubt-
edly he can suggest numerous
other pattern possibilities for
your consideration.
O. Paint at comfortable
temperatures in a dry, well -
ventilated room.
'7. Wipe up spatters and
spills immediately before they
harden.
8. Clean brushes, rollers
and other tools as soon as you
finish using them.
il. Wear rubber gloves while
painting and cleaning brushes
or rollers to protect hands and
hasten clean-up time.
10. Consult the paint dealer
if you have any questions.
Water Softener
Makes Household
Chores Easier
Problem water plagues resi-
dents of Huron and Perth coun-
ties. Private and municipal
water in these areas contains
traces of iron, sulphur and
hardness elements.
The major cause of hardness
is the presence of certain cal-
cium and magnesium com-
pounds. When water is heated
these precipitate and form
scales on hot water systems, in
your kettle and in your steam
iron. They react chemically
with soap, making scum which
sticks to the sides of the bath-
tub and which never rinses
completely from the laundry.
Everyone is familiar with
reddish rust rings in porcelain
sinks and bowls, which water
experts claim is a dead give-
away that the water supply con-
tains traces of iron.
The condition can be cor-
rected with the installation of
filtering or conditioning units,
available either on a rental or
sales basis.
Modern Heating
Units Are Compact
How much enjoyment you
get from your home depends to
a great extent on how it is heat-
ed
eated and cooled. This isn't sim-
ply a matter of temperature.
You can be uncomfortably cold,
or uncomfortably warm, while
the thermometer reads 70°. It
depends on how well your heat-
ing contractor designs a system
to fir your needs.
If the system is too large
there will be the unnecessary
expense of an oversize installa-
tion, if it is too small, the
furnace may burn itself out.
The most widely used house-
hold fuel in this area is oil.
Electricity is also being used
for heating in the home.
Some of the new heating
units are incredibly small but
imposingly effective and can
be tucked away in a corner or
closet. They are especially
suitable for single-levelhomes.
Today, any home, old or
new, can have a useful base-
ment in which the heating unit
is so inconspicuous that it won't
even be noticed. For a growing
family in an older home it's
very practical to consider ex-
panding "downward". Many
houses have basetnetlts as large
as the entire floor area. This
unused space can be put to
practical use„a heating con-
tractor at very little cost.
Take Another Look at Attic
The attic is olten a gold
mine of unused space that
could be at lliird as an extra
bedroom. If there is n reason-
able amount 03 room a small
"suite” may be made for one
or two youngsters, with bed-
room and adjoining study or
hobby rutin.
If the attic is well insulated
the rooms may be quite com-
fortable even without dormers
for cross-veinilation, a certain
amount of air being obtained by
opening the doors between the
rooms.
In attic rooms built -11tbunks,
desks and cupboards are in or-
der. Attics make excellent
playrooms so space should be
allowed for the activities for
which the roans is intended.
Another excellent use for
the attic is a sewing room..Plau
for plenty of storage space for
materials and equipment. A
pull-out elrtting Whit' is handy
for cutting patterns. Ile sure to
include a folding ironing hoard
and plenty of counter top over
cupboards.
Cedar closets built in the
attic could take care of all out-
uf-scasun clouting.
