HOCKEY'S FORMATIVE YEARS
W
E
Late in 1911 the Young Men's Club of Toronto's Waverley Road Baptist Church
started the ground work for a new hockey rink behind the church, It was a small
rink by today's standards but the young men and the neighborhood were proud of the
project. The new rink became so popular that one of the gentlemen involved, Mr.
Frank Smith, called a meeting at his home. This meeting resulted in the birth of the
Toronto Hockey League which, since that time, has grown to over five hundred teams
representing more than seven thousand players.
.According to a report solicited by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association
the first Canadian hockey was played by the Royal Canadian Rifles, an Imperial unit
stationed in Halifax and Kingston in 1855. This is a certainty but there is a chance
that the game (field hockey on ice) had been played by British troops stationed at
Kingston before that time. However, Montreal authorities declare that their city
hosted the •first true hockey game in 1875 and that other previous games were merely
variations of shinny without any set of hard and fast rules.
It might be fair to say that no Canadian city or area founded hockey and that
any similar game played in Canada up to the time that the Montreal rule -makers
got to work was merely a transplanted European game. Many people think that the
original variations had their beginnings with the Danes, but there are indications that
a similar game was played in Ancient Greece as far back as 500 B.C. Regardless of
its origin, ice hockey as we know it today has grown to be recognized as Canada's
national sport and its popularity has spread to other countries.
TODAY'S CHALLENGE
Hockey is played across Canada for sheer enjoyment on indoor and outdoor rinks
that provide meeting places for our youth. It is an activity where color and creed
are forgotten. It is an activity that provides an escape -vale for the inner tensions
of our youth. .An activity wherein boys and young men combine their efforts for the
glory of the team and in doing so add strength and unity to Canada. These young
Canadians contribute their skill, daring and courage to the fastest game in the world
and become a credit to Canada, their parents and hundreds of volunteer workers
across the land. The game also provides a formidable lesson to our youth. It is
simply this: If you win say little; If you lose say less.
It would be wrong to attempt to convince any youngster that in order to be a
good Canadian he should have, at one-time or another, played hockey. It would also
be wrong to entice any youngster to play hockey with the idea of earning material
gains such as a chance at the major leagues. Most youngsters will take readily to
the game without this type of encouragement. There is something stimulating about
flashing blades and spraying ice, the spirit of competition and the desire to give their
best that will call most youngsters to play. Mere is, however, an area of error
wherein most of us ,must accept the blame for a part of minor hockey that is not
satisfactory. This area is public participation . . . not just endorsement but active
participation. Whether or not our children play hockey we should give our support to
the local games. By doing so we can add a touch of tenacity to the moral fibre being
instilled in the youngsters participating. It's a small part to play in Canada's future
but one that can be highly rewarding, not to mention the on -the -spot enjoyment that
:swells as the game progresses until finally you find yourself shouting encouragement
to a ninety -pound youngster in a break -away.

Mayor DeWitt Miller, Stewart Beattie, Percy Stainton and WOAA President John
Crewson will drop the opening puck for each game, in that order. These gentlemen
will also choose the three stars from their respective games.
It is interesting to note that the Wingham Midgets and Pee Wees will be sporting
new hockey pants in this Saturday's games, due to the efforts of the Wingham Minor
Hockey Association and public assistance in purchasing Christmas cakes and Lyceum
Gift Certificates.
Wingham's Minor Hockey Association also receives support from the Lions, Kins-
men and the Wingham Recreation Council. There should be a great big thank you
handed out to these organizations for their efforts. Coaches, managers and referees
also deserve a pat on the back for their unselfish. efforts that consume far more time
than the public realizes.
