FORTUNATE REFUSAL,
One of North America's
greatest commercial operations,
the billion -dollars -a -year mail
order business, had its begin-
ning in the refusal of a Min-
nesota jeweler to accept a con-
signment of watches. Richard
Sears was a telegrapher in a
railroad station in that state be-
fore the turn of the century.
When Sears heard about the
jeweler's rejection of the wat-
ches, he arranged to sell them
to other telegraph operators,
As soon as the first batch was
sold, by means of orders sent
through the mail, Sears arrang-
ed for the manufacturer to fill
the leftover orders. He then
left his job and formed Sears,
Roebuck & Co.
Preparing to give a small
boy an aptitude test, a psy-
chiatrist told his nurse to put
a pitchfork, wrench and ham-
mer on a table. "If he grabs
pitchfork, he' 11 be a farmer.
If he grabs the wrench, he'll
be a mechanic. If he grabs the
hammer, he'll be a carpenter.'
But the kid fooled everyone.
He grabbed the nurse.
