Share Your Sight With the Blind "Seeing double is a good thing when you see for yourself and lend your vision to the blind, " said J. H. Kinkead, chairman of the Huron County Advisory Board. In an interview about White Cane Week, spon- sored each year by The Can- adian National Institute for the Blind and The Canadian Coun- cil of the Blind, the chairman explained how visual assistance for a few minutes can provide hours of useful activity for blind people. He told how one blind per- son had built at 19 -foot cruiser. His wife read the blue -prints and checked on measurements. She shared her vision only oc- casionally but her assistance provided her husband with a productive hobby for more than a year. Another example is in the Pioneer Museum Is Overcrowded G ODE RIC H --Huron County Pioneer Museum is overcrowd- ed, no space remaining for articles available throughout the county, curator J. H. Neill said in an oral report to county council. He had recommended at the previous session that an addition be built. "It will cost a lot of money to make more room," he said, "but how much is the museum worth today? They tell me in Toronto it is the only one that had a profit. By repairing and cleaning, we feel that Mr. Chisholm and I have improved the exhibits by $5,000." Mr. Neill termed the office accommodation "a contempti- ble humbug." The number of visitors in 1963 was 22, 088, receipts $5, 579, A survey of exhibits showed 5,888 donated, 118 lent and 741 bought, made or otherwise acquired. William S. Reed REAL ESTATE AND BUSINESS BROKER For prompt service in buying or selling all real estate properties FARMS - HOMES BUSINESSES Dial Wingham 357-2174 Jy3lrrb reading of the CNIB talking book catalogue. Since talking book users do not usually read Braille, they require sighted assistance to go over the titles. "You can read the catalogue in less than an hour," Mr. Kin- kead explained, "but you en- able the blind person to select enough books for many months of reading." Another place where you may see for the blind person is a neighbourhood store. Using the white cane, blind pedes- trians will frequently enter the shops alone, assuming that the clerk will offer aid. The blind person may have trouble locat- ing the clerk. A customer can help by letting the clerk know of the blind person's presence. Through 81 Canadian clubs of the blind, volunteer drivers are always in demand to supply transportation to social and rec- reational functions. Then there is always the need for guidance across the busy avenue or the location of a street number. "When you meet a blind person," the chair- man said, "take the time to do his seeing. Your sight will mean more to you when it serves someone else." MRS. JOLLIFFE DIES IN HOLLYWOOD, CAL. The objectives of a forestry club are: 1. To stimulate great- er interest in the conservation and better management of farm woodland, the reforestation of nonagricultural land and the planning of wind -breaks and shelterbelts or snow -hedges. 2. To improve the management of farm woodland, thus increas- ing the financial returns re- ceived by the owners. 3. To understand the forestry princi- ples in respect to improving the farm woodlot by thinnings, im- provement cuttings and the planting of forest trees. Projects include marking for thinning and improving a half - acre plot of woodlot, or plant- ing and care for a minimum of 100 trees as a wind -break, shelter -belt or snow hedge; or planting with forest trees, a minimum of one-quarter acre plot of land on the farm. A study is made on forestry prin- ciples that may be applied to a farm woodlot and the planting of forest trees for plantation and wind -breaks. Club members must be 12 years of age or over on January 1st and must not have reached their 21st birthday on Decem- ber 31st, 1964.
