Once when some one spoke
about the fringe on the top,
they were talking about buggy
wagons. Today, any fringe
means benefits.
After exhausting himself to
buy labor-saving devices, the
modern man discovers he needs
an electric exerciser because he
has no chores to perform.

MILDMAY - MOUNT FOREST
(Review weekDec. 25, 1963
to Jan. 1, 1964)
Don Hudson was tragically
missed by every good music -
variety lover, when his "Show
From Two Cities" was presented
on French and English CBC on
Christmas night. The entire
idea for this series was conceiv-
ed by Hudson and he was work-
ing diligently to make his ef-
forts into something of which
all of Canada could be proud.
Then suddenly, in a plane
crash, he lost his life and the
future of Canadian television,
variety was struck a cruel blow.
The second "Show From Two
Cities" was as different from
Hudson's firsr production as day
is from night; it was obvious
that the same genius was not
behind the reins. The produc-
tion starred Richard Verreau,
Elaine Bedard, Corinee Conley,
Paul Dupuis, and Joyce Sulli-
van, among others, and was set
in different locations in Toron-
to and Montreal. But it was
Christmas night, everyone was
filled with the Christmas spirit,
and would have appreciated
some lovely Christmas music
to add to the occasion. The pro-
ducer must have forgotten about
this for, with the exception of
two sappy Santas, it could
easily have been a summer
show. The medley of English
My Fair Lady' hits, and French
'Irma La Douce' music was en-
tertaining and cute, with beau-
tiful melodies, but when you
thought of it being Christmas,
it seemed out -of -place and not
nearly so appealing.

It was interesting to see
Hank Williams Jr. on Ed Sul-
livan's hour-long New Year's
Show last week. He is only
fourteen years old, but the simi-
larity
imilarity of his voice to that of his
late father is great indeed. If
anything, he has a better voice
than did Hank Sr. His father,
the great country -western sing-
er and composer, died of a
heart attack while on his way to
a singing engagement about
twelve years ago. He was only
in his early thirties. His songs
have been played throughout
all these years and will con-
tinue to be played, not only in
the country-and-western field,
but also on the pop standard
charts. Young Hank sang a
medley of his father's compo-
sitions for Ed's audience; it in-
cluded the great western hit
"Your Cheating Heart", and the
lovely ballad which Tony Ben-
nett made a hit, "Cold Cold
Heart". He has already signed
a recording contract with MGM
records, so before long, he will
likely be making second hits of
his father's songs or creating
plenty of his own.

Anyone interested in know-
ing what the top songs were in
1963? There were some real
gems, believe me, and some
equally kooky names belonged
to the performers who sang (??)
them. For instance, January
saw The Exciters near the top
with "Tell Him". Bobby Vee
had "The Night Has a Thousand
Eyes", and The Rooftop Singers
sang "Walk Right In". Con-
tinuing throughout the year,
there was a slushy romantic
ballad called "Hey Paula"; and
a ghastly sounding thing called
"Walk Like a Man" in February.
Peggy March, The Cascades,
and Peter, Paul and Mary held
down the fort in March, with
"I Will Follow Him", "Rhythm
of the Rain", and "Puff", res-
pectively. The Beach Boys in-
troduced surfing music in April,
with "Surfin' U.S.A.". In
May, some new performers,
young Leslie Gore, and Ruby
and The Romantics came
through with "It's My Party"
and "Our Day Will Come" and
an oldtimer, Nat Cole had
"Those Lazy, Hazy, Crazy
Days of Summer" which could
win the prize for the longest
title of the year. The middle
of the year presented us with
some great titles, among which
were "Tom Cat", "Da Doo
Ron Ron" (Don't ask me what
THAT means?), "Sukiyaki",
and "Judy's Turn to Cry" . Near
the end of the year, hits in-
cluded "My Boyfriend's Back",
"Sugar Shack", "She's A Fool",
"Papa Joe's", and a tender
thing called "Sally, Go 'Round
the Roses". Top money makers
of the year were probably Rick
Nelson, Bobby Darin, and Elvis,
with three hits each. And there
were some beautiful ballads
that made the hit parade this
year, too. Steve Lawrence led
the list with "Go Away, Little
Girl", and ditties like "My
Colouring Book", "I Love You
Buried taxing Day

RC President
Roy E. Davey, brother of
Mrs. John Ostrom of Wingham,
died of a heart attack on Mon-
day, December 23, and fun-
eral service was held on Boxing
Day in Toronto, with inter-
ment in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Mr. Davey was 51. He was
president of the Red Cross So-
ciety in 1951 and was, Toronto
sales representative for the
Globe Envelope Co. for almost
30 years.
Active with the Red Cross
since 1956, he was named hon-
orary member of the national
society in 1961, and from that
time till his death served as
honorary comptroller. He play-
ed an important part in the
work of the Etobicoke branch of
the Red Cross during Hurricane
Hazel relief work in 1957.
Mr. Davey established a day
centre in Etobicoke which is
still one of the best in Ontario.
This was perhaps, one of his
greatest contributions to the
society.
He is survived by his wife,
the former Muriel Garrett and
two children, Wendy Lynn and
Glenn Allan. There are two
sisters besides Mrs. Ostrom, Mrs.
Rose Perigoe and Mrs. A. G.
Clarke.

held in the school Tuesday af-
ternoon. The retiring trustee
was Russel Ross, who had given
15 years of service.
Harry Swan was elected as
the new trustee. The other
members of the board are Clar-
ence Ritchie and Hugh Simpson,
with Millan Moore as secretary -
treasurer.
Because", "Losing You", "Out
of My Mind", "That Sunday,
That Summer", and "Blue Vel-
vet" followed the same course.
The country-and-western field
provided some dandies — "From
a Jack to a King", "Still", and
"Abilene".

Things are looking up, too,
at the beginning of '64, with
records like "Washington
Square", "It's All in The Game;
"24 Hours From Tulsa", "Dom-
inique", and "There, I've Said
It Again" still getting a lot of
play. My prediction for the re-
mainder of the year? — Britain's
Beatles will be the big stars af-
ter many North American ap-
pearances and every record they
wax will be a giant hit.
