LONG WAIT
The wandering albatross,
an imposing white bird with a
wing -spread of 12 feet, is the
largest of all flying creatures.
L. is commonly found in the
turbulent waters around Cape
Horn and other southern waters,
where it rides out the worst
storms with ease. The wander
ing albatross usually nests on a
small island and the single egg
laid by the female requires
two months of incubation.
Even after the chick has em-
erged, another four or five
months must pass before it can
fly. During this period the
parents return to feed the chick
only two or three times a week.
