Canadian Girls in Training
Hold Annual Vesper Service
Sunday evening in the Unit-
ed Church the girls of the Wing -
ham C.G,I,T. again presented
their annual Vesper Service.
The girls filed into the choir -
loft singing the processional
hymn " O, Come, All Ye Faith-
ful" , and the congregation who
had braved the storm joined in
the singing.
Roelie Schipper was the lea-
der of the service assisted by
Ann McKibbon, who read the
Christmas story from the Scrip-
tures and Susan Spry, who led
the prayers. Mr. H. Treneer,
the organist and choir leader
for the girls, trained them for
the three selections presented,
"Come, Softly Come and Wor-
ship",
orship", "What Child Is This?"
and "Brightest and Best of the
Sons". A Christmas medita-
tion written for this service and
entitled "For Such a Time as
This" was read by Mrs. G. W.
Tiffin.
The culmination of the ser-
vice was the candlelighting
ceremony conducted by Sharon
Reavie, Mary Joan Corrin and
Judy Reed. During the reces-
sional hymn the girls each had
their tapers lit from the central
candles and formed two lighted
circles in the darkenedchurch.
The benediction was pronounc-
ed by Rev, C. M. Jardine.
Since 1941 these C.G.I. T.
Vesper Services have been held
across Canada and this year
about 50, 000 girls expect to
participate. The offering re-
ceived in Wingham and else-
where is sent to the National
C.G.I.T. Committee of the
Canadian Council of Churches

The first known distinct pas-
senger elevator was installed by
Elisha Graves Otin in 1857 in
the store of E. V. Haughwout
and Company in New York City.
Two years later Otis introduced
an elevator having an indepen*
dent reversible steam engine
connected to the winding drum
by belt and gear and this was
the real beginning of the com-
meroial use of elevators.
