S. was held in the church on Wednesday evening when the president, Mrs. Bernard Thom- as opened the meeting with a call to worship and a prayer. The roll call was answered with a current event in missions.. Minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary, Mrs. R. J. McMurray. Several items of business were discussed and the treasurer's report was given by Mrs. Eldon Kirton. Mrs. Glenn Golley then took the chair for the Home Helpers' meeting. A hymn was sung and Mrs. Wm. Robertson gave a Scripture reading and com- ments. Mrs. Ross Gray led in prayer. The offering was taken up by Mrs. Kirton and dedicat- ed by Mrs. Jean Griffith. Mrs. Golley introduced the guest speaker, Captain G. S. Newman of the Salvation Army Corps in Wingham. He stressed the need of love to the needy and especially to the sick whom we often tend to overlook. He also gave the history of the Sal- vation Army in America. Mrs. Murray Chapman thanked Mr. Newman and Rev. T. E. Ken- nedy closed with a benediction. Several contests were held with Mrs. Gordon Mundell and Mrs. Keith Moffatt in charge. Lunch was served. Soothing Antiseptic ti V // 41404 ERNIE RICHARDSON'S CURLING CAPSULES By ERNIE RICHARDSON After having watched curlers in action and ob- served some of the differ- ent styles of delivery you are ready to review what you have learned. Although curling looks like a rather complicated game it is fair- ly simple to learn. The fundamentals of de- livering a stone can be quickly grasped and a long period of training is not necessary before taking part in a game. In most cases the beginner can enjoy the game his first time on the ice after brief instruction. That's the start of curling fever. DELIVERY VITAL Delivering a curling stone properly is most important in making a good curler. I have seen some peculiar de- liveries which produce good results, but I would strong- ly advise learning a delivery that is fundamentally sound. One of the first things a player must do after getting into the hack is to make sure the cup (concaved por- tion of the bottom of the stone) is free of all dirt. This can be done by turn- ing the stone over and rub- bing it with the straws of your broom. The next step is t h e stance (or position) in the hack. The important thing about the stance is to be in a comfortable and re- laxed position with good balance which is most im- portant to the start of your delivery. The ball of the right foot is placed squarely against the back of the hack. The left foot is slightly ahead of the right foot and is flat on the ice. Both knees and thighs should be as parallel with the delivery line as possible without interfering with your balance. SLIDE IT, MAN: The stone should be slid forward as far as possible without pulling t h e shoulders or body out of GIFTS AND MONEY ARE PRESENTED FORDWICH-A presentation and dance was held in the community hall on Friday night in honour of Mr. and Mrs. Bob Wallace, newlyweds. Mrs.Wa1- ter Demerling read the address and the young couple was pre- sented with a kitchen suite, ta- ble lamps and a gift of money. Bob and Jean thanked everyone and dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Lorne Lamb - kin's orchestra. G HAM BODY SHOP NORTH STREET - PHONE 357-1102 position. The right shoulder will drop a little and your left hand will be holding the broom as a counter balance. The all-important point when starting your back - swing is that you have your eyes looking straight at the broom which is held by either the skip or vice -skip. You should NOT take your eyes off the broom until after the stone has been re- leased a n d the follow- through completed. My best advise is, always keep your eye on the target, which in curling is t h e broom. In starting the backswing your body should b e parallel with the skip's broom. The stone is swung straight back as if it were a pendulum, then brought forward in a direct line with the broom. The handle of the stone should be grasped by the fingers only, with the index and third fingers applying most of the pressure. This is so that you will have a free grip for a swinging de- livery instead of a push. But most important of all is to keep your eyes on the broom throughout the entire delivery. :,.+.r,;.:; •:, ; : •:phi! : [{ ii;jil`('" utx::'4'...,•.,i:- ...::.....:....:' i(IF3gIGl;1;,1,j;y;hlli":",;';:!t.
