BELGRAVE--The W. M. S.
meeting of Knox Presbyterian
Church was held in the church.
Mrs. Victor Youngblut presided
and opened with prayer and a
hymn. Scripture and meditat-
ion was read by Mrs. Mac Scott
Mrs. Alan McBurney led in
prayer.
The topic, the second part
of the study on Taiwan, was
taken by Mrs. Joe Dunbar. She
noted that there were four
tribes, Taiwanese, Cantonese,
Mainlanders, and Mountain
Tribes. The mainlanders hold
the political power. The peo-
ple are underprivileged and
their main problem is alcohol-
ism. There are four religious
groups, Moslems, Buddhism,
Confusiaism, and Christian.
Only 6 % of the population is
Christian. The people lead a
very hard life and stick to their
own churches and do not en -
courage,others to join. They
have developed schools, and
universities to train native min-
isters, doctors, and social work-
ers.

meeting with prayer.
Former Huron
Warden Passes
William R. Jewitt, 52, of
Hullett Township, and a former
warden of Huron County died
suddenly at his home on Aug.
5. Mr. Jewitt had been a mem-
ber of the township council for
11 years, five of them as reeve.
He was elected to the county
wardenship in 1959 and proved
one of the ablest men to hold
that post. He was president of
the county Children's Aid Soci-
ety at the time of his death.
Mr. Jewitt was born in Swift
Current, Sask. , and moved to
Hullett in 1931, where he car-
ried on a successful farming
operation until his death.

spent their holidays with Mrs.

Mr. and Mrs. Barry McGuire
visited last week in Barrie on
Lake Simcoe.
Mrs, Stanley Cook spent
last week with her daughter
and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs.
Bruce Marshall and family, at
Port Perry,
Miss Marilyn Taylor has
been vacationing for the past
week with her aunt and uncle,
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Taylor,
and Judy and John, at Sarnia,
Mr. and Mrs. Les Shaw,
Brian and Sharon of London,
spent the week -end with Mr.
and Mrs. Jack Taylor.
Jim Gillatly of Tillsonhurg
has spent the last two weeks
with Mr. and Mrs. William
Coultes and family.
Mr. and Mrs. John Spivey,
Brian, Arnold and the twins,
are vacationing with Mr. and
Mrs. Harold Procter.
The Lamont triplets, Danny,
Dwight and Donelda, quietly
observed their fifth birthday on
Monday, August 10.
Staff Holds
Surprise Party
BELGRAVE--A surprise party
was held on Saturday evening
in honour of Dan Hallahan at
his home. Dan has recently
left the employ of the Belgrave
Co-op to take a position at
Snell's Feed Mill.
Members of the staff of the
Co-op gathered at the corner
of the road and proceeded in a
group to Dan's home, He was
taken completely by surprise.
During the evening euchre
was enjoyed and several musi-
cal numbers played. The wives
of the staff members served a
smorgasbord lunch after which
an address, written by Lorne
Campbell, was read by Lewis
Cook and Ted Fear presented
Dan with a lovely sunburst elec-
tric living -room clock on be-
half of the staff members. Dan
thanked all those present.
Met at Church
BELGRAVE—The Evening
Unit of the United Church Wo-
men met in the church parlour.
Mrs. Albert Rieman opened
with a poem followed by a
hymn. Scripture reading was
by Mrs. Gordon Bosman and
Mrs. Harold Vincent read from
"God and You", an article
entitled "Why?"
The story of a favourite
hymn, "What a Friend We Have
in Jesus", was read by Mrs.
Gordon Rosman and Mrs. Agnes
Bieman closed with prayer.
Mrs, Stan Hopper conducted
the business and the minutes
were read by Mrs. Ken Barbour,
followed by the treasurer's re-
port by Mrs. Alan Dunbar.
Penny collection was received
and 10 hospitals and 7 home
visits to sick and shut-ins were
recorded. The offering was
received and dedicated.
The study on the second
part of Hong Kong, "Multitudes
and Their Problems", was tak-
en by Mrs. Ross Anderson. A
play, "No Certain Harbour" ,
was read by Mrs. James Coulte'
Mrs. George Michie, Mrs. Roy
McSween and Mrs. Ross Ander-
son. A hymn was sung and
Mrs William Coultes conduct-
ed the Bible study on "Meeting
Evil in Practise" from The Wor.
and the Way. Members took
part by reading Scripture pas-
sages.
A contest was conducted by
Mrs. Albert Bieman and lunch
was served. Mrs. Stan Hopper
will be hostess for the Septem-
ber meeting.
BEAUTIFUL RIVER
OF SOUTH AMERICA
The Orinoco River of Vene-
zuela is noted for its magnifi-
cent scenery. Winding over
1500 miles, the Orinoco some-
times floods the countryside for
100 miles across. Forests of
aromatic trees spread along its
banks. Birds of beautiful plum-
age are everywhere, while
hoards of monkeys swing
through the lofty branches. Be-
yond the forests rich green
plains stretch to the horizons.
Afternoon Unit Holds Meeting
BELGRAVE--The Afternoon
Unit of the U, C: W, met at the
church with 11 members and
four visitors present. The meet-
ing
eeting was opened with a hymn
and prayer by the leader, Mrs.
Stewart Procter. Minutes were
read by Mrs. Jesse Wheeler and
the offering was received.
Mrs. George Michie was in
charge of the Bible Study and
reviewed the first seven chapt-
ers of the" Word and the Way".
Mrs. Harold Vincent presented
the lesson, the subject being
Hong Kong. She gave the his-
tory and physical aspects of
Hong Kong and told of the ma-
terial and physical needs of the
people, the crowded conditions
of the city and the prevalence
of T. B. The meeting closed
with a hymn and benediction.
RECEIVES TROWEL --Abraham Shantz,
contractor of the firm of Shantz &
Hicks, presented the silver trowel to
Commissioner W. Wycliffe Booth, LL.D.,
as he was about to perform the official
laying of the cornerstone at the new Sal-
vation Army Citadel.
