Above—Elgin Vader, one of the two driver instructors at the On-
tario School for the Deaf, Belleville, explains a, point in the text-
book "Sportsmanlike Driving" to Judy Ann Wilson, 18, of Tim-
mins, Above right—Miss Wilhelmina Huffman prepares a class
of students for their ODT temporary instruction permits. In or_
idinary secondary school driver instruction courses, the students
get their temporary permits before the course starts. (Notice
that both Mr. Vader and Miss Huffman wear microphones. Ac-
tually they get their message across with a combination of sign
language and by speaking very clearly so that the students can
lip read and those who can, pick up the sounds on their ear-
phones). The course for the deaf is more comprehensive, Miss
Huffman explained. "Most of us, from the time we are small
learn many words by just 'overhearing' and thus we build our
vocabulary. So when we at OSD begin our driver instruction•
course we must start by teaching what is to our students a new
vocabulary and language used in driving."
Left—Since the instructors cannot talk to
the student while he is driving, they carry
"flip" cards with such sighs as "Ieft turn,"
which the student can read •at a glance.
Below Left—Before they get behind the
wheel of a car, students spend several
hours at the weel of the ,drivo-training
car. Here Mr. Vader records the time It
takes Ann Todd, 20, of Fairport Beach,
to move her foot from the gas pedal to the
brake. Below right—Wayne Brady, 18, of
Jackson Point, has his peripheral vision
tested.
