Mary's Heart,
Martha's Hands
BLUEVALE--United Church
Women met in the school room
of the church on Thursday after
noon, Unit One being in charge
with Mrs. Carl Johnston, vice
president of U, C. W. presiding
and conducting devotions.
Mrs. Charles Campbell in-
troduced the study program and
Mrs. Graham Campbell gave
the topic "The Christian as a
Homemaker", showing that the
homemaker should be a com-
bination of Mary and Martha,
with Mary's heart and Martha's
hands.
Prayers were given by Mrs.
Campbell and Mrs. Stewart Me
Lennan.
Mrs. Sparling Johnston gave
the first chapter of the study
book, "On Asia's Rim". The
sad condition of 38 million
souls in East Asia was described,
15 million being refugees. The
church should feel responsibilit)
for the care of these people,
needs are very urgent. One
nation is not more important
than another, in God's eyes.
The resignation of Mrs. Alex
McCrackin as treasurer was re-
ceived with regret. Mrs, W.J.
Peacock, supply secretary, re-
ported the sending of a bale for
overseas relief. A second one
will be sent soon. Mrs, Bert
Garniss was appointed a dele-
gate to the School for Leaders
at Alma College in August.
Plans were made for a
church supper toward the end
of June.
Gorrie UCW
Are Guests
WROXETER--The June meet-
ing
eeting of the Wroxeter U. C. W.
was held last Wednesday eve-
ning in the Sunday school room
of the church with a good at-
tendance. The ladies of Gorrie
U.C. W. were guests for the
evening. All units participated
in the meeting, which was
opened with welcoming words
to all and especially the Gorrie
ladies, by the president, Mrs,
Stanley Gallaher,
A hymn, was sung and the
Lord's Prayer repeated in uni-
son. The secretary's report was
read by Mrs. Archie Miller and
the treasurer's report given by
Mrs, Wm. Wright. The busi-
ness was taken up and a thank -
you note from Miss Laura Col-
lar, who had been the special
speaker for the Spring Thank-
offering, was read,
At this time the film "The
Gift", was shown, with Mrs.
Ken Edgar operating the pro-
jector. This filen, under the
sponsorship of the United Church
of Canada, depicted the "Mis-
sion of The Church" and " The
Growth of the Church". It pro-
claimed the glory of God toall
the world and the task of the
Christian Church.

TOM HAYS, OF OAKViLLE, is pictured at the barbecue
ovens which he set up in the town park on Friday for
the monster beef barbecue, sponsored by the local
Legion. Nearly 1,600 pounds of meat were cooked
during the day and enjoyed by a big crowd, starting at
five in the afternoon.—A-T Photo.

For Anniversary at <nox
BLUEVALE--Anniversary ser-
vices were held in Knox Presby•
terian Church, morning and
evening on June 9th.
Rev. S. J. Stewart, of Moles
worth, was the guest speaker.
At the morning service he
based his sermon on the story
of blind Bartimeus whose per-
sistent seeking resulted in his
finding Christ and the joy of
having his sight restored. So
we shall find if we seek.
The theme for the evening
service was how Saul did not
make the best of his opportuni-
ties. Fle was tall and hand-
some, modest and humble,
with a great gift of personality,
but prosperity destroyed his pur•
pose. It is not the possession of
good things that molds a char-
acter, but how we retain them.
When an unhappy experience
comes we turn from God as did
Saul.
Our pioneer people built
this church to the glory of God,
We should treasure it, asking
God for guidance, then the
church will go forward in
Christianity.
The singing, led by the sen-
ior choir with assistance from
some junior members, was un-
der the direction of the organ-
ist, Mrs, Nora Moffatt. At the
moming service a quartette
• frorn London, Mel Capener,
Ross Dilling, George Moffatt
and Bill Robinson sang, "The
Ninety and Nine" and an adap-
tation of "The Lord Is My Shep
herd." Two members sang the
duet, "Softly and Tenderly Je•
sus is Calling". At the eve-
ning service Miss Mary Har-
mon, Mrs. Bill Robertson and
Ross Gray sang "To -morrow"
and the choir sang, "The Lord
Is My Shepherd."
