Excite- ment is running high. Those Canadiens are really in the lead, and with a pinfall of 328 ahead of the Leafs, it is not too likely that anyone will catch up to them. However, stranger things have happened, and I, for one, know that the Canadiens won't take the play- offs without a fight from the other five teams. Standings now are as follows: Canadiens, 9608; Leafs, 9280; Rangers, 9154; Hawks, 9126; Wings, 8857; Bruins, 8780. Don't forget the banquet on April 11 at the Legion. And tumbling act. Stored away in cellar or garage over the long winter months, bicycles are now being uncovered by youngsters eager for another summer's fun of cycling. But the fun can turn to tragedy unless parents take the time and trouble to prepare both bike and rider for the road. The Ontario Safety League urges parents to conduct a two- point program for all bike pilots in the family. 1. Give the bike a thorough mechanical inspection. Look for loose handle bars, grips, and spokes. Make sure the frame is straight and free from cracks. The brake must be dependable and fast acting. Make sure all moving parts are cleaned and properly oiled. Bicycles need a bell, horn or gong; white or amber light at front and red light or reflector at rear; 10 inches of white re- flective material is required on the front forks, and 10 inches of red reflective material on rear fender. 2. Test the rider. Make sure he knows the proper hand signals, the basic laws of the road and common sense riding habits. Here are a few of the vital rules to follow: Ride in single file with traffic, and close to the curb, Never have more than one person on a bike. Use both hands to steer. Walk bikes across busy intersections. Watch for sudden opening of car doors. Never hitch to a moving vehicle. A free booklet on bicycle safety is available from Ontario Safety League, 208 King St. W.
