Mitchell presided at the U, C.. W. meeting in the United Church here on Wednesday last, for the Easter Thankoffering, with over 40 ladies in atten- dance. Guests were present from Donnybrook and Calvin - Brick United Churches, and from the Presbyterian Chureh here. Mrs. Mitchell asked for a minute of silent prayer, in memory of Rev. W. J. Watt, who that morning had passed away in Walkerton hospital. All sang, "Rejoice the Lord Is King." Mrs. E. H. Gros- korth read the Scripture and Mrs. Mitchell led in prayer. Mrs. G. E. Farrier gave a piano solo," The Holy City", Mrs. Mitchell led in the meditation period, speaking of the Easter season as a waiting time; waiting for leaves, flowers, sun, grass and a resur- rection time, as Christ is wait- ing. Mrs. Gilbert Beecroft, as a representative of the Presbytery brought greetings, and sympa- thy for the president, Mrs. Millan Moore, daughter of the late Rev. Watt. She said that presidents of the U.C. W. were asked to attend executive meetings of the Presbyterial. Mrs. Jas. Leddy of Donny- brook, gave a reading and Mrs. Ezra Scholtz introduced the speakers for the afternoon, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Mc- Clenaghan of the Saugeen In- dian Reserve at Southampton. The McClenaghans have been there for the past two years, On the 15, 000 acres live 625 Indians. There are 145 pre-school age children and 135 in the three schools, The Indians work in factor- ies at Douglas Point, fish, gather cedar boughs in 14 lb. bundles for 35¢ a bundle, and work in tobacco fields. There are a few girls in training in hospitals. There is another United Church at French Bay. Special entertainment was held at Christmas, and delegates went to Five Oaks. They de- pend 011 parcels of clothing sent in, and at these times the clothing is spread out in the church basement, and the families come and pick out things to supply their needs. They pay 5¢ or 10¢ for each piece, and this helps with church expenses. The speakers told of the dif- ferent socials held and of the special suppers with Indian corn soup at 15¢ a bowl. TheCara- vaners were there for a week in the summer, and all enjoyed the craft work. Thirty babies were baptized in 1962. Mr. McClenaghan showed many beautiful slides to demonstrate their work, the people, country- side and their new manse home. Mrs. J. D. Beecroft thanked them for a very informative lecture and for the interestitig pictures of scenes and people. Rev. G. C. Mitchell closed the meeting with prayer. Lunch was served and all enjoy- ed the social time together. Country Curlers Hold Euchre WHITECHURCH—Twenty- seven tables were in play at the Curlers' euchre, held last Friday night in the Bluevale Hall. Mrs. Wm. Dettman and Wm. Irwin held high points, and Mrs. E. Nichol and John Turvey held low points. Two boys, Terry Johnston and George Johnston, won the novelty prizes. Ronald Coultes, president of the Country Curlers' Club was chairman for the meeting that followed. Prizes were received by the first twelve rinks in order of games won. Jim Adams' team won 22 games out of 23; Clarke Ren- wick, 18; Jas. Coultes, 18; Wm. Mcllwain, 15; Elmer Bruce, 15; Wm. Dettman, 14; John Nixon, 13; Cecil Coultes, 13; Eldrid Nichol, 13; Alex Corrigan, 12; John M. Taylor, 12; J. R. Taylor, 12. Four lady curlers, Mrs. Lloyd Montgomery, Mrs. Ronald Coultes, Mrs. Bert Hastings and Mrs. Jas. Coultes won the Harley Crawford trophy, and Mr. Adams' group, the Coun- try Club trophy. The ladies of the Women's Institute served a delicious lunch, and all enjoyed the evening together. Many Friends At Funeral WHITECHURCH—Many old friends of Rev. W. J. Watt and his family, gathered on Friday at the United Church here for his funeral. His nieces, Mrs. Stanley Hunt, of Ottawa, Mrs. (Rev.) Archie Manson of Chel- sea, Quebec, and Mrs, Glen Swan, Brucefield; a nephew, Wm. McClenaghan, Waterloo; friends from Oakville, Gorrie, Dungannon, and other points, where he or his sons had preach- ed during the past years, and many ministers from churches in this district attended. WHITECHURCH Mr, and Mrs. Douglas Claire and children of Toronto spent the week -end with her parents, Mr, and Mrs. Fred Daw, Mrs. Gordon Ritchie of Kitchener visited on Sunday Wingham Advance -Times, Thursda with Mt, and Mts. Clarence Ritchie, Mr, and Mrs, Harold Con - grain attended a family dinner at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Wilfrid Congram, Wingham, on Sunday in honour of the 40th wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mts, Malcolm Lane of Kinlough. The group of twelve bowlers of Mrs, Congram's league held a dinner party at Danny's Restaraunt last Thurs- day and were entertained at Mrs. Congram's on Monday ight after the final bowling ame. , April 11, 1965 — Page 3 Mr. and Mrs. Russell Gaunt spent a few days last week in Toronto with Mr, and Mrs, Don Dirstein, and returned borne with them on Friday, when the Dirsteins spent the week -end here, During the high wind storm of Thursday, the wind lifted the sliding doors on the Gaunt garage and tore off the track and the sill to which it was attached.
