Basel, Switzerland

eflo Fellows:
We have spent over a week
in Holland but unfortunately
there aren't many flowers out
yet. The crocuses are begin-
ning here and there. We hope
that in a couple of weeks when
we return from our trip south
to Italy, the daffodils are out,
We have visited several of
the villages along the Zuider
Zee, where they still wear the
wooden shoes and the baggy
pants. These places are quite
colourful, with the sail boats
and the fishing boats. We
have been to Amsterdam a
few times. This is a lovely
city, with its canals and
flower markets, However,
Holland is changing very fast.
Supermarkets are springing up
all over the place. There is
still a great shortage of houses.
Times are very good here and
there are many new houses,
even though you have to wait
from 2 to 5 years before they
let you build. This is one way
of combatting inflation. It is
pretty hard on the people but
in Holland prices are still
quite reasonable, compared
With other countries.
People are driving more
cars, mostly the small Euro-
pean type, but like in Canada,
they are way behind in their

road building program. Ten
years ago about 20% of the
population had cars; now about
half I would say. I don't know
what they are going to do
when people drive as much as
we do in Canada. We think
we have narrow streets in
Quebec City, but you should
see them here. In all these
old countries the streets are
made for bicycles and walking.
We were in one of the large
co-operative bottling plants.
Since the war many of the
small co-operative fluid milk
plants have amalgamated into
large plants. This was a plant
with all new equipment and
served most of the province of
North Holland and the city of
Amsterdam.
I was quite suprised to see
that there are still many wind-
mills, and all in working order.
Some are used for pumping
water from the low lying areas
to the sea, some for chopping
mills, and others are still used
for sawing lumber. Of course
at reclaimed areas of the
Zuider Zee they use all diesel
power. They have reclaimed
a tremendous number of acres
of land and it is good land;
beautifull farm buildings are
dotted all over this area.
It is amazing how closely
the towns are situated and
there is still enough land left
to feed themselves and have
some left over for export. I
sure got my eyes opened in the
amount of butter people eat.
In restaurants all over Europe,
including England and Scot-
land, you get all the butter
you can eat—and that is butter,
not margarine. Our restaurants
in Canada and the United
States are real pikers when it
comes to butter, compared
with Europe.
We started for foreign lands
on Saturday morning; first
visited friends in Friesland in
the afternoon, drove to De
bildt near the city of. Utrecht
and then on to Arnheim and
stayed at Holland's largest
motel. That wasn't hard to do,
because there are only 2motels
in Rolland. It was a beautiful
place. It cost us 20 guilders
for the night. One dollar is
worth 3.6 so figure it out for
yourself, less than $6.00.
The next morning, Sunday,
we started out for Luxemburg.
We drove through the province
of Limburg, (still in Holland).
Here the land begins to roll and
in places it looks much like
Canada except for the buildings
We passed through Maastricht
and crossed the border into Bel-
gium. There were no questions
asked and on we drove to Lux-
emburg. We drove through the
Ardennes; it was quite foggy.
We stopped in the middle of
the afternoon and had dinner.
Then we drove on to the border
of Luxembrug through a lot of
small towns and up the moun-
tain roads. Roads are very
twisty and short turns but we
made it. We stayed in Luxem-
burg city. This city is situated
with mountains and valleys all
around and I expect it is very
pretty in the summer time. It
wasn't freezing but the wind
was clamy and cold
The next morning we drove
on to Metz where we filled up
with gas. It isn't much wonder
that people drive small cars.
It cost the ten dollars to have
my gas tank filled. This is
French. From here to Basel
Switzerland. Tomorrow to
Geneva and Pisa, Italy.
So long for now. Pete
