court November 8, appearing on his
own behalf in a case regarding a hog
operation that went into receivership.
The summonses for the charge of
abandonment ordered the Bothwells to
appear November 13 at the Owen Sound
OPP station for fingerprinting under the
Identification of Criminals Act.
As the news of the charges spread,
local people rallied to offer support to
the Bothwells. On Monday morning,
November 13, a group of 50 gathered
outside the OPP station. When the
Bothwells were admitted, as many sup-
porters as could entered with them. An
OPP sergeant was called, and George
Bothwell said he would go to the finger-
printing room if he could take witnesses.
After a short confrontation, the OPP
officer refused to admit members of the
support group to the fingerprinting
room. Charges against the Bothwells
for failing to appear for fingerprinting
are pending.
Azelda Bothwell's parents were
staying with the family after the event.
"If officers come to arrest us, we feel
that they will have someone with them
who would take the children to a foster
home or wherever," Azelda said. "My
parents are here to prevent that ..."
Some members of the local commu-
nity say that the charges should be
dropped completely, and that an apol-
ogy should be made to the family. They
are asking supporters of the Bothwells
to write Ontario's attorney -general, Ian
Scott, in Queen's Park, asking him to
check into the charges and asking that
the charges be dropped.
"We feel a grave injustice is being
done to the Bothwell family, especially
to Azelda Bothwell," says Gisele Ire-
land, president of Concerned Farm
Women, "and we are urging all mem-
bers to write either Ian Scott or their
MPP."OStaff and freelancers
