NEWS
It is the nature of the agriculture market,
as distinct from General Motors or
General Electric, that there is a total
absence of control and output. Such
control is essential to agriculture ..."
"We should not for a moment yield
to the people who say this is inconsistent
with the competitive system, inconsis-
tent with the free -enterprise system, not
in keeping with the glamorous imagery
of the economy we have from Margaret
Thatcher and Ronald Reagan."
Taxes: "A tax structure which fa-
vours the set-aside of land for family
operations is something which will
always appeal very strongly to me."
Interest Rates: "We've had in the
past 10 to 20 years a coup by the people
who have money to lend." Galbraith
added that this results in high govern-
ment deficits and "murderously high
interest rates by all past standards ..."
"I would like very much, and have
long been an advocate, of a policy of a
stronger tax base, a more progressive
tax system, and much, much lower inter-
est rates."
"This in turn would reduce the anxi-
ety, reduce the pressure on these people
who in the past 10 or 15 years have
bought land in order to sustain income,
only to discover that a large part of that
income is extracted by high interest
rates."
Solutions: "I'm convinced the
problem here is far less serious than the
will to act. Where there's a will to
preserve rural institutions, the methods
of doing it are not all that difficult."0
RIDDELL LOOKS
FOR EXPLANATION
by Glenn Creamer
Jack Riddell wants to know what
happened. It's been more than four
months since he was replaced as On-
tario's Minister of Agriculture, and his
removal from the post appears to be an
"about face" on the part of his boss, the
premier, when it comes to agriculture.
Back in August of 1987, the Huron
MPP hosted his annual barbecue and
officially launched his re-election cam-
paign. Some 1,200 party faithful at-
tended to support him and to meet half a
dozen Liberal cabinet heavyweights,
including party leader David Peterson.
