42 THE RURAL VOICE
Sharing the spirit .. .
This, of course, was the occasion for
great rejoicing.
Odin appeared as a winter god,
clad in grey, with a broad -brimmed
hat and riding a white horse. Accom-
panied by his wolves and ravens, he
was supposed to lead a world army of
the souls of those who had died during
the year. As Christianity progressed,
he came to be represented as having
power only over the unbaptized, and
his army consisted then only of the
souls of children who had died before
baptism.
Thus, from being a terror to
children, Saint Nicholas grew to be
their friend, and even now is said to
appear at Christmas time, bringing
candy and toys for the good children
and a birch rod for the naughty ones.0
Gingerbread Man
by Eileen Burnett
Yesterday
I cried all day.
Anyone could see
My left arm dangled
Down past my knee;
Buttons were awry,
Eyes were crooked too.
No one could possibly
Want me in view.
Today
I hang in glory
On glittering family tree
Ablaze with rainbow lights.
I am pointed out
So none will fail to see ..
Family's tiny daughter
Lovingly fashioned me.
