If the bulbs are stored in a garage
or cold shed where the temperature
could fall below freezing, the pots
should be protected with some mulch.
If they are stored in a basement, keep
them away from heating pipes and the
furnace, for obvious reasons.
And if you are short of potting time
right now, set your bulbs in the bottom
of the fridge and pot them when the
shoots begin to emerge, planting the
same as you would any other plant.
Have I mentioned that the bulbs
should not be allowed to dry out?
Good. While you are keeping an eye
on the moisture of the bulbs, you can
also see how the root develops by
watching the shoots. Good root de-
velopment is reflected in good strong
sprouts.
Once the sprouts reach three inches
in height they may be taken from their
cool dark spot and brought out to
bloom. They should first be put in a
darkened room where the temperature
is around 65 degrees F. After a week
or two, the leaves and buds begin to
appear and the pots may be moved to
a lighted room where the temperature
is still on the cool side.
Remember to keep watering, and if
the light is coming from one window
the pot will have to be turned regularly
to stop the plant from leaning in one
direction. The glorious blooms of
spring will last up to two weeks if
kept in a cool room.0
IN THE HOUSEHOLD
To prepare an "environmentally
friendly" fabric softener, add 1/2
cup to 1 cup of vinegar to the rinse
water.
To make silver polish, combine
and boil 1 quart of water, 1
tablespoon of baking soda, and 1
tablespoon of salt. Boil the
silverware in this mixture for 3
minutes, and polish with a soft
cloth.

And try substituting borax for
bleach.
