FEEDBACK
Knock! Knock!
It's unfortunate that Gord Wain -
man's flair and wit which he brings to
his column was non-existent in the
October issue. Instead, pork produc-
ers were sarcastically insulted and
inhumanely exposed to his diatribe.
My not -too -scientific analysis
would indicate that if, in fact, produc-
ers are less intelligent than their pigs,
then it follows that one urban -based
agriculture reporter is less intelligent
than the paper he writes on.
Demoralizing and insulting pork
producers in print when they are down
is a sign of cowardliness. Why not
come to a meeting of 100 producers
and call us stupid in person?
By taking a "leap of faith" in the
1988 election, and after receiving a
guarantee from the Prime Minister
that the trade deal was a document
that could be cancelled, Canadians
had hoped that liberalized tariff -free
trade with the U.S. was a possibility.
Events of 1989 have changed many
opinions, but we have to remain opti-
mistic. Ontario pork producers are
some of the most intelligent, innova-
tive, and dedicated producers to be
found. Lambasting them with an "I
told you so" attitude is truly a waste
of time and energy.
Our industry does not need any
more criticism or condemnation of our
export policy. Instead, we must re-
group and redefine our goals and unify
with strong political backing to re-
establish our position in the U.S.
Finally, if Gord Wainman believes
that pork producers really are dumber
than pigs, he should buy his own hog
farm and show us how it should be
done. I'll even be his "dumb" con-
sultant for $50 per hour.0

Don't blame the FTA
Too many people, including that
always fair columnist, Gord Wainman,
are blaming the Free Trade Agreement
for the present very serious problem
being experienced by hog farmers.
Everything that has happened with
the U.S. countervail happened under
