ATTENTION: PERTH COUNTY FARMERS
Hi folks! The Perth County Federa-
tion of Agriculture has taken this news-
letter in The Rural Voice to communi-
cate with the farmers of Perth County
about our ongoing business and pro-
jects. We hope that our members (and
future members) will read the reports
and take the time to express their con-
cerns and opinions. The Perth County
Federation of Agriculture (PCFA) is
always open to member input.
COUNTY STRUCTURE
Since this is our first report, and it is
my maiden voyage in ink, I thought that
a highlight of the structure of PCFA
would be in order.
The Ontario Federation of Agricul-
ture (OFA) and the county Federations
of Agriculture are autonomous bodies.
That means that they each have the right
to self-government.
The PCFA is made up of about 1,000
members.
Some of these members are town-
ship directors, who meet each month.
We also have an executive consisting of:
• President (Paul Verkley),
• 1st Vice (Matt Crowley).
• 2nd Vice (Gary Hill),
• Secretary -Treasurer (Agnes
Dcnham), and
• Past President (Bill Denham).
Include some commodity board rep-
resentatives and you have a typical
PCFA monthly meeting.
At the monthly meetings we discuss
ongoing projects such as gate signs and
membership drives. We also learn what
happened at the latest OFA board meet-
ing. It is important that the directors and
members present get acquainted with
the issues.
THE OFA AND THE PCFA
The response of the PCFA to the
issues is also very important. The OFA
regional directors are usually present at
our monthly meetings.
Perth County has three provincial
regions:
• Perth North, represented by Paul
Verkley;
• Perth South, represented by Bob
Simpson; and
• Perth Central, represented by Matt
Crowley.
Perth County is very fortunate to
have a long-standing tradition of having
its OFA regional directors being active
PCFA directors too. It is my under-
standing that some counties do not have
this direct link with their OFA represen-
tatives.
With the overlapping of some posi-
tions, it is sometimes confusing for new
members to figure out this structure. I
hope my explanation helped.
ON THE AGENDA
Ongoing: We are currently working
on such important issues affecting
PCFA as:
1. Farm Property Tax Rebate
2. Abandoned Railway Use
3. Interest Rates
These are just a few of the items on
our agenda. If you have an idea or
concern, don't hesitate to contact your
local director or come to our next meet-
ing. In future newsletters we will ex-
pand on these and other topics.
