PROCEDURES FOR
MILK SAMPLING
Before sampling any lot of milk, it
must be mixed adequately to disperse
the butterfat globules evenly. Milk in
most farm bulk tanks must be agitated
for at least five minutes to secure a rep-
resentative sample.
When bulk tanks are equipped with
two -speed agitators, the high speed
should be used when collecting a
sample. On and after January 1, 1989,
all bulk tanks must be equipped with
interval timers. This will ensure that the
butterfat globules are dispersed evenly.
It must also be remembered that bulk
tanks with more than 600 gallons of
capacity may require 10 minutes of
agitation or more.
Milk that has been frozen or has
churned particles should be tagged so
that a butterfat test will not be used for
payment purposes.
Any milk sample must be kept at a
temperature between 1 to 4° C from the
time it leaves the bulk tank until it is
tested. If the milk goes outside this
range, the Central Milk Testing Labora-
tory must be notified.
Nothing can alter payment tests
more quickly than sampling and testing
milk from odd milkings. When milk is
picked up on a regular basis, either every
day or every other day, the morning and
evening's milk are blended, and the test
results from samples are representative
of the farm's production for that period.
When sampling is done from odd or
partial milkings, the tests can vary sig-
nificantly from the normal. In most
cases, the evening milking tests higher
than the morning milking because of
the shorter interval between milkings.0
