In 1988, exports exceeded imports by $3.48 billion, an increase of 64 per cent from 1987. The improvement is due mainly to a sharp increase in Canadian exports, which in 1988 reached $10.26 billion, a gain of more than 15 per cent from 1987. Higher international prices for wheat and canola increased the value of these exports by 38 and 24 per ccnt re- spectively, while volume went down be- cause of reduced supplies for export. Preliminary data also show sharp increases in the volume and value of exports of skim milk powder, live hogs, and cattle. Canadian imports of agricultural products remained stable at $6.77 bil- lion. Beef and corn imports increased, while imports of soybeans, apples, and tropical produce decreased.0 HERDSPERSON OF YEAR NAMED BY OPC Duncan McKinlay of Clarksburg, Ontario was the first winner of the new Herdsperson of the Year Award given in association with the Ontario Pork Con- gress in Stratford last month.
