County Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER
The Grey County Federation met on
April 26 at the OMAF boardroom in
Markdale.
The treasurer's report indicated an
improvement since receiving payments
of grants and levies from some of our
townships.
We have had delegation meetings
with our township councils and have
been received most favourably. It is our
belief that we need to communicate
more for the betterment of us all.
Genie Blake, our OFA field repre-
sentative, has planned our annual mem-
bership drive for the week of June 5 to 10
and explained the benefits of keeping
our membership numbers increasing.
Clay Schwegler gave a brief report
on the OFA activities at the provincial
level and he has reams of material con-
cerning the environment. This is very
important to us farmers, as we control
such a large land area, so we must make
sure we are protecting it.
All the garbage from the urban areas
comes to the country for disposal and
it's time we had a say in the treatment of
such waste material. We hope to offer
some helpful input to our County Coun-
cil, as this is an important issue to them
at this time.
Our board meeting dates have been
changed to every fourth Thursday.
A meeting that was called for May
15 in Owen Sound to revitalize the
Humane Society was cancelled. I ex-
pect a meeting to be called at a later date
and I encourage everyone to get in-
volved as we need to know what the
Humane Society's intentions are.

The Ministry of Transportation has a
booklet called "Farm Vehicles on On-
tario Highways." I would suggest that
you pick one up as it makes interesting
reading! Many of us are ignorant of the
law and the police and Ministry of
Transportation and Communications
are cracking down on those breaking the
law.
Bentinck Township Federation is
planning to have a horse-drawn float in
the parade at the Durham Fair this sum-
mer. They have also planned a big
annual dinner and gala event on October
5, 1989, in Durham. The guest speaker
will be Brigid Pyke.
If anyone has questions concerning
the drought programs, call Agriculture
Canada at 1-800-267-6343.
I started sowing today (May 16), and
as I was driving the tractor I realized
what interesting times we live in. I
thought of many things, such as: what's
in Mr. Nixon's next budget? will it be as
bleak to us farmers as the federal
budget? I expect it will be!
I also thought about the beef produc-
ers "No" vote. Why was it a mail -in
vote? Why were so many unrealistic
statements made in the press? Why did
only 50 per cent of eligible voters cast a
vote? Is this a case of a silent majority?
Does this mean 50 per cent of beef
producers would not have minded a
change or does it mean 50 per cent don't
care about their industry?
Then I thought: are all these extra
taxes we're having to pay going to re-
duce the debt or are they going to help
pay for indexed pensions? (maybe even
to fix up a house on Sussex Drive!).
I was getting kind of tired by then
and I thought: it's a good bet most of us
do a lot of thinking when we are driving
along this bumpy road of life and most
of our thoughts are questions waiting to
be answered by forces that are hard to
influence.
I'll close by saying that I hope to hear
your thoughts and questions and hope
you will come to our meetings and ex-
press them.°
