Waterford, Ontario NOE 1Y0 519-443-8601 52 THE RURAL VOICE NEWS TENT CATERPILLARS INFEST GREY -BRUCE The Grey -Bruce area can expect an infestation of forest tent caterpillars this year, according to the Ministry of Natu- ral Resources. "Our surveys of egg masses done in conjunction with the Canadian Forestry Service indicate that Keppel Township will be the hardest hit," says John Lam- bie, forest management supervisor with the ministry in Owen Sound. "Sizeable populations have also been identified in portions of Sullivan, Bentinck, Euphrasia, and Holland Townships. There may be some spo- radic outbreaks elsewhere too." The caterpillar feeds on the leaves of hardwood trees such as maple, oak, ash, poplar, and birch. It is not the same insect that makes silken tents in fruit trees, hawthorns, and choke cherries. "To determine if you have a problem or not, count the number of egg masses on a representative host tree," Lambie says. Fact sheets are available from the Ministry office in Owen Sound explain- ing what to look for and how to conduct the counts. For information about controlling outbreaks, contact Tree Watch mem- bers Rae Maclntyre at 376-0859, Ian Maclachlan at 371-1202, or Anne Brindle at 376-3076.0 BRUCE WI AWARDS 4-H SCHOLARSHIP Karen Fenton of R.
