POLITICAL VETERAN
PASSES AWAY
Farquhar Oliver, former Ontario
Liberal leader and a native of Grey
County, died January 22 at the age of 84.
Oliver began his political career at
age 16 as a campaigner for Canada's
first woman MP, Agnes MacPhail. At
22, he was the youngest person ever
elected to the Ontario legislature.
Winning the Grey riding in 1926, he
represented the area until 1967, when he
retired to his farm near the town of
Durham. He was a member of the
United Farmers of Ontario until 1941,
when he became a Liberal minister and
then party leader.0
FIELDMAN RETIRES
Bob Ferguson, fieldman with the
Dairy Inspection Branch for Bruce,
Grey, and North Huron, retired recently.
A 1953 Ontario Agricultural Col-
lege graduate, Ferguson farmed before
starting his career in dairy inspection.
His work spanned the transition of milk
production from three fragments into
one of the strongest marketing organiza-
tions in agriculture.0
