Organizers are stressing the slo- gan "Showcase of Pork Excellence," and steps have been taken to expand the competition featuring pork products. Innovations chairman Frank Kains plans to have as many innovation award winners' projects on display at the Pork Congress as possible, and with higher cash awards. For the first time, a herdsperson award will be introduced at the Con- gress, adds Cathy Aker of the producer awards committee. The criteria for the award is still being finalized. Highlighting the theme "Pork Man- agement — Key to the 90s" will be Dr. Peter English of the University of Aber- deen, Dr. Bernard Laarveld of the Uni- versity of Saskatchewan, and Helmut Loewen of the pork board. Producer profiles will include Karen Richardson, a herdsperson with Pure Line Swine, Richard and Jeanine Ross of Fergus, and Clare Schlegel of Stratford.0 CFW ELECTS SEVEN DIRECTORS FOR 1989 The Concerned Farm Women have elected seven directors for 1989: Val- erie Wasserfall, Gertie Blake, Jennifer Pruder, Ellie Ockenden, Kathleen Mof- fat, Joy Ward, and Gisele Ireland. At their meeting last month, the group also heard a report by Lena Weber, chosen to represent the Con- cerned Farm Women on a two-week Nicaraguan Tour sponsored by Oxfam. Weber, a nurse at the Chesley Hospi- tal, farms at Sconeview Farms. She has spent considerable time in Nigeria and has hosted students from Uruguay. She reported that a farm women's organization has existed in Nicaragua since 1979 and that the tour will be a learning and listening experience. Nicaraguan women, she added, do the major part of the nation's farming, sometimes holding a firearm, while their men protect the villages.OGI
