DEALERS EXPECT A
BETTER YEAR IN '89
Canadian farm equipment dealers
may be eternal optimists, but they're
heading into 1989 with hopes fora good
year.
Market prices are up, says Brent
Hamre, chairman of the Canadian Farm
and Industrial Equipment Institute, and
the government is sending $850 million
to farmers for drought assistance.
In 1989, sales are expected to climb
13 per cent to $1.7 billion as a result of
an increase in gross farm revenue from
$21 billion in 1987 to $22 billion in
1988.0
FARM DEBT FALLS
- BUT SLIGHTLY
For the first time in 16 years, Cana-
dian farm debt fell last year, reports
Statistics Canada.
But the drop was small: 1.6 per cent,
or down to $22.7 billion.0
