The Rural Voice, 1989-01, Page 21where accuracy counts, because if you
are off the line it is a wasted stroke.
Another knack is to twist the axe so it
strikes at an angle, increasing the
splitting action and preventing the
head from burying itself deep in the
block. I have always maintained that
a good axeman is a good golfer, and I
would expect the reverse to be true as
well.
Another of the events that I

an era. There were a number of rock
elm trees still standing in our district.
Then a man named MacMillan came
through and bought them. A gang of
French Canadians arrived to fell the
trees and make them into square
timber. The men had cross -cut saws,
common axes and broad axes, and a
chalk line. They would fell a tree
and then slab it, leaving it square but
rough. Then the man with the broad
axe stepped in.
When he was finished, the log
would be exactly square and of the
same diameter at the top as at the bot-
tom. The wood would be as smooth
as if it were planed. My brother had
the job of teaming this timber to
Clandeboye. Never since have we
seem elm trees or square timber of
this quality.
And so time has rolled by. The
marketable logs have nearly all been
cut. Dutch elm disease has ruined
bushes where these trees predomina-
ted. Oil is now the common fuel
because of its convenience and the
bush, instead of being cherished, is
often waste land. When I look back,
though, many of my memories are
linked with the bush: the glory of the
autumn colours, the childhood games,
wood -cutting, making syrup, rabbit
hunting, berry picking, gathering nuts
— glorious recollections of a long -lost
boyhood. Yet poor indeed is the man
who has not had that soul -restoring
experience of an autumn aftemoon in
a shade -spangled woods.0
