County Federation of Agriculture NEWSLETTER
NOVEMBER MEETING
The Grey County Federation of
Agriculture was opposed to the pro-
posed $25 increase in the OFA annual
membership fee.
At the November meeting of the
GCFA, board members indicated that
they were not in favour of such a large
increase, but suggested that $10 would
be more in line and instructed delegates
to the annual convention to vote accord-
ingly.
The increase raises OFA member-
ship fees from $100 annually to $125
(note: the proposal was passed at the
OFA convention).
Delegates representing the GCFA at
the convention were Case and Donna
Vanderham, Elmer Scarrow, and Ar-
nold Oliver from Grey North, Clay
Schwegler, Bill Johnston, Wes Spar -
ling, and Dave Clarke from Grey Fast,
and Bill Pullen, Ted Jacobs, Murray
Clarke, and Wayne Caughill from Grey
South.
The convention was held November
21 to 23 in Toronto.
Convention resolutions were dis-
cussed briefly at the monthly meeting. It
was suggested that delegates consider
the cost to the OFA if a resolution were
implemented to increase spending.
If we vote against a fee increase "it
would not be logical" to vote in favour
of a resolution to increase spending, said
Clay Schwegler.
It was then suggested that counties
submitting resolutions also put forth a
budget for their operation. This would
help all delegates to make better deci-
sions knowing what the cost break-
down for implementing the resolution
would be.
The November meeting of the
GCFA was the first for the newly elected
executive.
Elections took place at a very suc-
cessful annual meeting held October 26
in Durham. Long-time federation sup-
porter, Lorne Eccles of Egremont
Township, was acclaimed as president,
while Elmer Scarrow of Sullivan Town-
ship was elected as 1st vice-president
and Allan Kinney of Artemesia Town -

ship was elected 2nd vice-president.
There were four executive directors
elected at the November meeting; they
are Dave Clarke of Euphrasia Town-
ship, Agnes Diemen of Normanby
Township, Arnold Oliver of Holland
Township, and George Black of Glenelg
Township.
(Regional directors elected at the
regional meeting September 28 are:
Grey North, Donna Vanderham; Grey
Fast, Clay Schwegler, Grey South-
West, Bill Pullen.)
President Eccles told the board that
he will try a new approach in running the
meetings and will allow both vice-presi-
dents the opportunity to chair a board
meeting.
He would also like to see the com-
mittees restructured and job descrip-
tions provided to outline their duties. It
was decided that the executive commit-
tee, along with field representative
Gertie Blake, would meet to tackle this
job.
Past president Murray Clarke re-
ported on the All Candidates Meeting
held in Chatsworth on November 2. The
meeting was co-sponsored by Grey and
Bruce county federations.
Clarke said that the meeting was well
attended and ran successfully, aside
from a poor sound system. The main
issues discussed were free trade and
abortion, subjects that were addressed
by all the candidates.
However, Clarke said he was disap-
pointed that there were not more ques-
tions asked about agricultural issues.0
