Combination wood -oil furnaces are
becoming increasingly popular. This
type, which is a single unit burning ei-
ther wood or oil, will automatically
switch to oil if the wood has burned
down and is no longer supplying heat.
A good chimney is another vital
consideration. Generally, there are two
kinds of chimneys. A masonry chimney
is considered best, but is expensive. A
prefabricated stainless steel chimney is
less expensive and easier to install, but
the choice depends on individual prefer-
ence and the type of house.
For safety's sake, remember that a
wood -burning appliance should be con-
nected to its own chimney flue. Make
sure that the appliance is well clear of
combustible surfaces.
Chimney installation must conform
to the standards of the Ontario Building
Code and the Ontario Fire Code.
Chimney fires are caused by an accu-
mulation of creosote which ignites in the
flue. Burning seasoned wood and keep-
ing the chimney temperature above
150°C minimizes this accumulation
because there is less condensation of
woodsmoke in the chimney. The only
way to eliminate creosote, however, is
to remove it manually with a brush.
For safety, check the condition of
your chimney once every six weeks, and
clean it once a year.
Fireplaces can be built-in or made of
free-standing, prefabricated metal.
Fireplace efficiency cannot match that
of an airtight stove. Heat is lost up the
chimney, and furnace -heated air is
sucked from the room. This heat loss
cannot be completely overcome, al-
though glass doors or tubular heat ex-
changers may help.
Fireplace inserts can also be in-
stalled. Inserts fit into the existing flue
and hearth, forming an airtight seal with
the chimney. They are less expensive to
install than a wood stove, and may in-
crease fireplace efficiency by up to 40
per cent.
If shopping for wood -burning equip-
ment, you should buy only units certi-
fied for use with wood by the Canadian
Standards Association, the Underwrit-
ers' Laboratory of Canada, or Warnock
Hersey Professional Services Ltd. All
systems must be installed in accordance
with the Ontario Fire Code or the On-
tario Building Code.O
