The Rural Voice, 1988-11, Page 20PICK OF THE CROP! TEN OF THE SEXIEST FARMERS IN SOUTHERN ONTARIO After taking a rather — well, highly — unscientific poll, Rural Voice staff compiled a list of the 10 sexiest farmers in southern Ontario. If Chatelaine magazine could do it, we figured, why couldn't we? It wasn't an easy chore, however, as interviewer Bob Reid notes, because agriculture produces more than its share in this field. It also produces more than its share of good sports, and we thank the top ten for their sense of humour — another quality found in abundance in the countryside. W by Bob Reid hen one searches for adjectives to describe farmers, the list usually 'ncludes honest, hard-working, ver- satile, dedicated .... Rarely does the word "sexy" appear in any attempt to capture the essence of the agricultural man. This oversight has been apparent for a long time, yet it is hard to imagine who on the face of this good green earth are sexier than farmers. Whether you consider the face of a cash cropper tanned and windblown from hours spent in the open fields, the strong but gentle hands and demeanour of a dairy farmer, or the muscular body of a livestock farmer who has handled countless bales of hay, no profession boasts more individuals with sexy traits. Farmers have the looks to satisfy any taste, and any sensitivity as well. This is the result of working closely with nature and family as well as having a genuine concern for the needs of others. During evening con- versations of farm couples, you will rarely hear the phrase "Not tonight, dear, I have a headache," although you might hear "Not tonight, dear, I have another meeting." The strong, self-sufficient nature of farmers, combined with morals as straight and upstanding as a row of corn, produce the type of individual perfect for the cover of a Harlequin romance: a bolt -upright figure on a hilltop staring in to the distance, a beautiful woman looking admiringly into his intelligent, knowing eyes. The sexy side of farmers has been ignored longer than a squeaky hinge on a back -kitchen door. No longer! A recent poll taken by Rural Voice staff has revealed 10 of the sexiest farmers in southern Ontario whose attributes make them obvious choices. With the fine array of candidates available, the difference between the 10 selected from the top 20 finishers and the also- rans was infinitesimal. Those making this year's list are pictured below. GRANT McCOMB Grant McComb admits that win- ning a place on the list of 10 sexiest farmers in southern Ontario is going to change his life. "I will have to dress sharper when I go out to meetings now ... to keep up the standards." The 33 -year-old beef farmer has already set standards that most men would have difficulty attaining. His outgoing nature allows him to converse freely at the many meetings he attends on behalf of the Ilderton Beef Committee and other industry - related gatherings. "I don't like sitting in a corner." When not at a meeting or busy farming, Grant enjoys watching his children at baseball games or at the beach — but probably no more than female beachgoers enjoy watching him watch his children. Always sensitive to the feelings of those around him, the R. R. 2, Denfield farmer was concerned about how his agricultural associates would react to his latest award. Grant and wife Lonnie have two girls. 18 THE RURAL VOICE
