Jersey Club Enjoys
Favourable Market
Jersey producers in Perth County
and across Canada have reasons to look
forward to the future.
The small but mighty Jersey cow is
gaining in popularity. Milk production
in Jerseys has increased, the high butter-
fat and protein levels in milk from Jer-
seys looks attractive to dairymen, and
there is a booming export market for the
breed.
The prime customers, says Russell
Gammon, secretary of the Canadian
Jersey Cattle Club, are Japan, Brazil,
and the U.S.
Membership in the Jersey club,
Gammon adds, is at its highest since
1969: 520 from Ontario, 840 in all of
Canada.
Gary West, president of the Perth -
Huron Club, milks 35 to 40 Jerseys as
well as 35 Holsteins in partnership with
his father. He is married with two chil-
dren, and his wife, Brenda, works part-
time at the Ontario Ministry of Agricul-
ture and Food office in Stratford, milk-
ing cows before going to work in the
morning.
Club activities in Perth -Huron in-
clude monthly meetings, the Perth -
Huron Harvest Sale of about 50 head
each year, and the annual Perth -Huron
Jersey Show, which attracts about 80 to
100 head to Seaforth in September.
District Jersey clubs send a director
to the Ontario Jersey Club. The Perth -
Huron director is Hans Boonstoppel
from near Clinton.
West cites the need for less quota
and less land as two of the advantages of
keeping the small -sized Jersey cows. A
dairyman might have to buy 7,000 litres
of quota for one Holstein, but only 5,000
litres for one Jersey, he explains, and
that 5,000 litres brings a premium for
higher butterfat.
And given the increasing emphasis
on promoting high protein, he adds,
"Probably the Jersey is going to be as
high a protein breed as any. In fact, the
Jersey is the highest of the dairy breeds
in terms of total solids.
Vice-president of the Perth -Huron
club isJim Sparling of Varna. Secretary
is Caralyn Van Dorp of Seaforth; treas-
urer is Gladys Van Egmond of Clinton.0
