As a student at Stratford Collegi- ate, young James and several friends bicycled all the way to Toronto one summer in the early 1940s to see the opening of Walt Disney's Fantasia. From 1944 to 1948, Reaney was a student of English literature at the University of Toronto. He won the Governor -General's Award for poetry with his first book, The Red Heart. Many of Reaney's works have been translated into Chinese, German, French, Hebrew, and Czechoslova- kian. Winner of a second Governor - General's Award for A Suit of Nettles (1958), he is perhaps best known for his plays conceming the life and times of the Donnellys. As professor of English at the Uni- versity of Western Ontario, Reaney still enjoys visits to his stepbrother's farm in Perth County. His opposition to a proposed freeway across prime farm land between Stratford and Shakespeare in the early 1980s won the admiration of many residents.0 J. A.
