The Rural Voice, 1988-07, Page 35SPECIAL TRAGEDY RULES SAFETSAF PREVENT WITH PTO Y Over the 10 -year period from 1976 to 1985, there were 149 PTO -related accidents reported to the Workers' Compensation Board of Ontario. While the frequency of such accidents has been declining in recent years, the numbers are still unsettling, because most of these mishaps could have been avoided. Most PTO accidents cause severe injury or death. Inadequate equipment shields or operator carelessness are responsible for virtually all PTO -related incidents. The proper shielding of equipment is all-important. All damaged or missing shields should be replaced immediately. Replacement components must meet the specifications for the machine on which they are to be used. Shafts must be of the correct length to prevent separation or "bottoming out." Always disengage the PTO before getting off of the tractor. Operators have slipped and fallen onto rotating shafts or been caught in moving parts while trying to make repairs or clear plugged machinery. By establishing the simple rule that no one may go near machinery while the power is engaged, most PTO accidents could be eliminated. Never step across a rotating power - shaft. Some PTO equipment — forage blowers, grinder/mixers, etc. — must run at full speed while the operator is working in their vicinity. Always walk around the revolving shaft. Safety devices are usually reliable, but they could malfunction. • Check for the free movement of all integral shields. You should be able to rotate the shield freely by hand with the power disengaged. Repairs should be made immediately if the shield or bearings are damaged. Close fitting clothing and slip - resistant footwear should be standard garb for all equipment operators. Ragged old coats and baggy overalls are easily caught by rotating machine parts. It's not a spectator sport! By- standers should stay clear of equipment. Children must never be allowed in the work area. PTO accidents happen in the blink of an eye. Prevention depends on constant alertness.0 CALEY'S GRAIN A FULL SERVICE ELEVATOR Receiving: Wheat, Canola, Soyabeans, Corn & Barley Contracting available Fast turn around — 5000 bu./hr. elevator NeW Faates, has cut unloading time in half R.R. 3, Port Elgin, Ont. 519-389-9744 k.,-.0 I• t) n' F .AF , J 6- ,.'/ ,i,fyY'Q'( W, Irf"Y(Y v,PAwn,, wir r t'i") /4:441v //•Yi _Ili' . it `/'iWic, u,a n/,tii/ ii"/ni++n n;an 1 `+o ,air . '""rff"i l',Y N , , PPIrl Na y i i',A,t r( 1 M J;&I M p /%'W/y1y1/l, 441 ] Il y WPr,GN rr „/ yw„ 41 y 4 rgvr It's A Great Time For You To Save On A Horse.
