DRY -TREAT METHOD
A CRITICAL FACTOR
Dairymen all know that dry -treating
cows is a great way to combat mastitis.
But there's more to dry -treating than just
doing it. The method you use to infuse
your dry cows has a major effect on your
ability to control mastitis in your herd.
In a study at Hill Farm Research
Station in Louisiana, dairy scientists
Nickerson and Boddie compared dry
treatments on the basis of either full or
partial insertion of the syringe cannula
into the teat. Their findings showed that
full insertion of the syringe tip can carry
bacteria up into the teat cistern, reducing
the effectiveness of dry treatment and
possibly increasing the rate of new in-
fections in the quarter.

When infusing a dry cow with anti-
biotic, make sure you follow these
simple rules:
• wash the udder and teats with a
mild antiseptic like an udder wash solu-
tion,
• dry the teats with a clean towel,
• swab the teat end with a cotton pad
saturated with alcohol,
• insert the syringe tip into the teat
opening, but don't push the whole tip
into the teat,
• depress the plunger, remove the
syringe, massage the quarter to distrib-
ute the antibiotic, and dip the teats,
• finally, mark the cow and record
the treatment. Marking can be done in a
number of ways — just make sure that
anyone who milks can tell the cow is
treated. Don't risk contaminating your
milk supply. Penalties start at $4/hec-
tolitre on a whole month's shipments.
That would cost the average producer
about $1,000.0 Dave Rose
