A well-known antibiotic used to control respiratory problems in both humans and animals, sulphamethazine was recently the centre of a controversy at the Canada -U.S. border, where American officials delayed a shipment of Canadian pork to test the meat for drug residue. Bob Watts of Cyanamid Canada says a recent study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on sulphamethaz- ine toxicology "does not demonstrate any human health hazard from the con- tinued use of sulpha products." The study reported that high dosages of 1,200 and 2,400 parts per million of sulpha fed to two groups of rats for two years resulted in thyroid tumors. Any potential human exposure to sulpha from its use in food animals is "thousands of times lower than the lowest level in the study," Watts says. "The safety margin is enormous." The permitted tolerance level in pork is 0.1 parts per million. The concern over sulpha levels in the U.S. may result in stringent testing for residues in both domestic and im- ported swine. But Cyanamid Canada notes that studies done in 1980 at the University of Guelph showed that sul- phamethazine residues are not a prob- lem when correct procedures are fol- lowed. Since 1979, the company adds, violations of sulphamethazine residue rules have decreased significantly in Canada. Cyanamid Canada recommends that producers increase their control meas- ures by strictly observing withdrawal periods and ensuring that no cross -con- tamination of feeds occurs More than 30 per cent of the pork produced in Canada is exported to the U.S. The Ontario Pork Producers Mar- keting Board has set up a task force since the incident at the border "to further investigate and identify the problems and aggressively educate producers and related service industries."0
