or have turned over the farm to their
children, and yet still maintain a vested
interest in agriculture.
Sharon Weitzel of Women for the
Support of Agriculture countered that
the declining number of farm women is
the strongest argument in favour of
keeping the network exclusive. "Farm
women need a strong identity," Weitzel
said. "We can't afford to water down
what membership we have."
A discussion of the "right to farm"
issue, centred around the example of a
farmer needing to spread manure or run
noisy equipment on Sundays, much to
the consternation of his rural neighbour,
was finally the determining factor in
choosing the name Farm Women's Net-
work over the proposed Rural Women's
Network. Yet the need for an umbrella
organization such as the Farm Women's
Network to encompass as many inter-
ested parties as possible is recognized.

MARKETS IN CHINA
HOLD PROMISE
China offers livestock exporters
some attractive markets this year, says
the Department of External Affairs.
A recent sale of 325 head of breeding
dairy cattle worth $500,000 "bodes well
for other Canadian exporters," accord-
ing to a recent issue of the department's
newsleuer, Canadexport.
The sale of dairy cattle by an Ontario
exporter was finalized at Agro China 87,
a trade fair in Beijing last November
which attracted 95 foreign companies
from 12 countries.
Canadian exporters, said an external
affairs spokesman in the newsletter, can
expect to find markets for at least the
equivalent of 2,000 head of breeding
dairy cattle, semen, and embryos, 1,500
to 2,000 head of breeding swine, and
small but regular shipments of breeding
stock worth about $330,000.
There may also be demand for poul-
try units, small -capacity grain storage
bins, meat -packing and slaughterhouse
facilities, seed -cleaning plants, and a
feed -manufacturing operation.0
