OUTLOOK FOR 1988: Due to an
apparently better outlook for our farm-
er customers I am more optimistic for
1988. The machine inventories are
down in most locations and I believe
some new equipment will be in short
supply this summer. Good used
equipment is also moving very well
and at reasonable prices.
BUSINESS CHANGES: We have cut
back our orders of machines and have
been able to get units from other
dealers who have been very willing to
move them up to this point. I can see
this changing in the near future as
equipment sales gain momentum. We
will probably lose some deals because
of the lack of equipment available, but
we have paid considerable interest in
the past and are going to keep that cost
down in future, if possible.
TRENDS AND INNOVATIONS: There
is more interest in conservation tillage
this past year. I don't believe people
are going to jump into conservation
tillage as heavily as in the past — as
in selling off moldboard plows, etc.
and going totally to coulter chisels or
chisel plows. The land in our area is
not suitable for steady conservation
tillage practice, in my opinion.
BUYING PATTERNS: Our customers
have indicated that the high-power
tractor purchases will be cut back
