WHAT'S NEW
VICON LAUNCHES
FEEDING SYSTEM
An automated concentrate feeding
system that reduces concentrate and
labour costs while increasing milk yield
has been introduced by Vicon.
The system marks the first stage of
research in Vicon's development of a
fully automated dairy parlour. Vicon is
better known for specialized forage
harvesting and crop cultivation equip-
ment.
One feeding station handles up to 30
cows. To expand the system, sub -sta-
tions connect to the master, allowing a
maximum of 20 stations for a 600 -cow
herd.
Cows are recognized as they enter a
station by their coded "responder col-
lar," which instructs the feeder to dis-
pense the ration at eating speed. Feed-
ing "little and often" eliminates stressful
rush hours and ensures the optimum use
of feed without the danger of slugging
and butterfat depression.
Each cow's ration is based on her
lactation curve and can be amended in
seconds to balance consumption to milk
production. An alarm system identifies
cows that consume less than 70 per cent
of the allowed ration in any 24-hour
period.
