SOIL CONSERVATION
FUNDING IS FERTILE
Agriculture Canada has $75 million
in its pockets for soil conservation, and
is looking to provincial governments in
order to negotiate how to spend it.
"Agriculture Canada wants to set up
a parity relationship with the prov-
inces," says Dr. Harry Hill, who was
recently appointed to spearhead the
program. "We need to work together to
develop tailor-made conservation pro-
grams for each province. We'llalsorely
heavily on the expertise within farm
organizations."
The $75 million will be distributed
according to the degree of soil degrada-
tion and subject to the availability of
matching provincial funds.
Most of the money will go towards
financial and technical assistance for
farmers t:) implement conservation ac-
tivities on their own land. The rest will
go towards demonstrations to illustrate
new conservation techniques, and to-
wards research, monitoring, and public
awareness.°
