NOTEBOOK
house. Mrs. Johnston rummaged
through the cupboard to find one tea
bag, a half box of stale soda crackers,
and a jar of peanut butter. She washed
spoons, discovered she had no milk or
cream in the fridge, and informed her
friends that unless they milked one of
Mr. Johnston's Holsteins, they'd have
to drink their tea black. The tea kettle
whistled, the ladies chortled, and two
hours quickly passed.
Meanwhile, Mr. Johnston huddled
on the cellar steps considering escape.
There were only two ways out,
through the kitchen and through the
window. He wouldn't face those
women in his shorts, and he couldn't
run down the lane to the barn in clear
view from the road. He decided to
wait in the dank basement which
stored Mrs. Johnston's preserves and
no warmth. The house was heated by
wood stoves. Mr. Johnston shuddered
and fumed.
When the cackling finally sub-
sided, the blue-cheeked Mr. Johnston
bounded up the cellar steps to demand
of his wife: "Why didn't you throw
down my pants?"
"I — I — didn't know you needed
them," choked blushing Mrs. Jones,
who had returned for her purse.0
