Ford was well pleased with the average of $71 he got for each of his mink pelts last year, and while the price was unusually high, it was actu- ally low compared to the price Ford got for his first mink pelt in 1949. "I was averaging $15.90 a week in a furniture factory and I got $42.50 for my first mink. I guess that's what got me trapping." That, and a love for the outdoors. A self-taught trapper, Ford doubts that either of his sons, Bill or Ken, will carry on the trade, although they do help with skinning and scraping "I was averaging $15.90 a week in a furniture factory and I got $42.50 for my first mink. I guess that's what got me trapping." occasionally. Ford's wife, Doreen, drives the chase vehicle when Ford takes his boat down the rivers in spring to trap muskrat. With the help of his sons, Ford also operates a brood fish farm and hatchery and two growing farms, from which 245,000 pounds of trout were produced last year. But trapping, he says, is a profes- sion that requires dedication and com- mitment. Trappers attracted only by the money, he adds, will be sadly disappointed. Market prices depend on fashion and consumer attitudes as well as supply and demand, he says. As an OTA director, Ford, along with other trappers, is helping to im- prove trapping practices and present trapping favorably to the public. Al- most all trapping regulations are set or initiated by trappers, and they deter- mine the length of the season, which often varies yearly depending on the availability of various species. A workshop is held each year for trappers to promote better fur handling and humane trapping practices, and trappers are required to take an exten- sive night course before they get their licence. Topics include pelt handling, humane trapping, and conservation. "Trappers will shorten the season if the numbers are low," Ford says, "They like a happy medium and will stay in the middle of the road, taking surplus, but not delving into breeding stock."0 AGITATOR Portable Liquid Manure Agitator • Eliminates plugged gutters, with slats in place. • 220 volt electric.
